Hi guys,

I have been going through my engine bay and doing some basic cleanup. In the process I was trying to make sense of my heater hoses. The truck is a '65 titled as a '66 LPB with original F135.

It has two heater valves under the hood, one on the inlet hose from the block behind the carb, the other valve is plumbed on the outlet hose, into the water pump. This valve doesn't look stock and is plumbed into the water pump with what looks like an iron plumbing nipple with a 90 bend.

Is this the correct place for the outlet to stub back into the system? I thought that it plumbed back into a tee on the lower rad hose (like on later cruisers). Is that where it is supposed to go? And what would be the purpose for having a shut off on the outlet?

Here are a few photos of the setup.

Thanks
-Justin

Heater valve at the rear of engine is correct. The one on the water pump is a prior owner modification. The hose for the heater system should go where the red arrow is.

Cool, thanks Tahoe. Do you or anyone else know what threaded into the hole on the early water pump? There must be some sort of fitting or nipple for the bypass hose from the thermostat housing. It's not the cast nipple that the later water pumps all have.

I WAS WRONG. After checking parts book and another thread, looks like the valve at the water pump was an option??
I have seen that set up before and just assumed that it was a PO set up, because it looked like it was made at a ACE hardware store with a stock Toyota valve.

Funny, I saw that thread over in the 25 section yesterday. I was surprised, the piece the valve connects to does look like it belongs on a plumbing fixture in a 60 year old house.

Not sure why they had the valves on both the inlet and outlet still. Before I knew better I turned off the valve on the water pump and not the block and it was enough pressure to cause my heater core to start leaking.

Researching my heater situation now (‘63 FJ45 SWB but this isn’t original engine, about 17.5k units later) and came across this thread. I have the two valve setup you guys described, the valve at the water pump looks interesting.

Don’t have anything in the cab, so may be on the hunt for a heater but what? The firewall penetrations for the hoses are right behind the FD vacuum valve and higher up on the firewall than I’ve seen in other pics.

Noticed this slot and a spring kind of thing in the water pump housing. Looks original but what’s its purpose? Something to do with the pulley?

Thanks Dom - the orientation of the firewall hole penetrations is the key I think. Mine are vertical (wrt to each other), all of the other heaters I’ve seen have horizontal oriented penetrations (passenger side heaters). I also need to see what the mount holes look like and if there are any welded nuts in place. If you get a pic from inside the engine compartment when you have a chance that’d be great. Thanks! Paul

I believe the spring thing is a retaining wire.

Thanks 1969FJ!

Hey Dom - actually no rush now at all. I just purchased a heater on the auction site that’s out of a ‘63 FJ40. The firewall hole patterns match what I have exactly (non-factory dealer install) on ‘63 FJ45, so these two rigs must of had the same install. Don’t know if it will work, or even if my motor and setup doesn’t work, but at least I won’t have to drill any new holes lol!
