Sort of crashed my GX 470. Can you advise on my options?

Vehicle : 2005 GX 470 with 220,000 miles

We live in the bay area and were road tripping in South-west Nevada area. On a dirt road, I misjudged a bump, the car caught air, bounced, and landed in another deep channel on the track, stopping almost immediately. Thankfully no airbag deployment. But the damage was
1. The stock skid plate bent into the radiator assembly. Minor leak. We spend 3-4 days more in the area trail driving. We could also drive back to bay area filling up water at regular intervals. Car tracks straight, and runs just like before.
2. The roof top tent was on Yakima cross bars, which unhooked from the roof rails and crashed into the sunroof, denting the area above the door as well as smashing the sunroof into a million bits. We got a corrugated sheet and duct tape to seal it all up. Its actually quieter than stock now

I got an insurance appraisal done, and the surveyer forgot to do the roof assement and made an initial 2000$ claim. They are redoing the assesment now.
I did go to Toy connection Santa Clara (I got to jeff for all work on the GX) and Jeff things that repair will be
2000 for the front end (Radiator etc., , skid plates, front cross bar etc.,) and around 5000$ for the roof which includes removal of dent, putting in a new sunroof assembly and painting.

Based on this he thinks that Insurance may total the vehicle. Insurance appraiser (Geico) is not sure.

1. If they do not total it, I would definitely get it repaired. I am wondering about the roof expense. Any other places in the bay area for a second opinion.
2. If they do total is, how to they appraise the price? I would 99% not buy it back. We were planning a Tundra/LX 570 (2016 whereabouts with larger gas tank next year, so will pull that purchase early)

Does it make sense to have it as a Salvage title and buy it back? If I do sell it later, how much of a price hit do salvage titles get. For example I reckon that without the tent, this would sell for 11000$ (she has 220000 miles). After salvage title how much would she go for?

The roof is going to be pricey wherever you take it, especially pulling/replacing the sunroof - lots of labor.

Insurance usually uses something in the ballpark of KBB/Nada values. If they come in low, you'll have to negotiate a bit, really depends on the company and the vehicle. They usually total a vehicle somewhere around 70% of market value, which means older vehicles can get totaled easy.

Buying back with a salvage title can make sense if you don't actually want to fix everything and plan to keep it until it's fully depreciated. Depending on state, getting it back on the road can require inspection by the state police or similar - check local laws to be sure it's not too much work.

What would I do? If your underside is relatively "California rust free", I would keep the GX regardless if the insurance company totaled it out or not.

The front radiator support and radiator would need to be addressed of course.

The sunroof glass retails for around $760 new from Lexus ... cheaper on fleaBay or at a salvage yard. Assuming the glass is the only issue and the sealing area of the roof is straight I'd replace the glass and ignore the rest of the roof repair.

Pocket the extra money, be proud of your GX's "battle scars", buy a decent aftermarket skid plate and enjoy it. You sir are one of the lucky few of us that has actually tested the GX off-road capability!

Salvage titles never scare me as long as I know what the extent of the damage was and if it was repaired correctly. Unless it is flood damage - in which case I run.

ARB bumper, stock running boards and no real skid plate?

Denso radiator is under $200, takes 30-60 minutes to swap. Straightening that front cross member, frame shop should be able to pull it back pretty quickly. I'd cut it out, straighten it and weld it back because it would just cost me a day of my time.

Sunroof can be swapped out if it's just the glass, if there is roof buckling then I'd send it to a body shop.

Roof buckling. They say may need new roof and that alone is 6000$ including the entire sunroof assembly

Where is the roof buckle? Could be the angle but I dont see anything serious...If its just that dent just above the door then I would PDR it.

Heres what I would do:

-PDR the roof dent and touch up paint
-have someone install new sunroof glass
-diy your crossmember somewhat straight or pay to have a shop pull it back in an hour.
-new radiator
-used oem skidplate on here or ebay

Damn. You came up. Not gonna lie.
Yup, not too bad a deal from Insurance.

Now its three vehicles in the fraw

I’m late to the party on this thread. Glad everyone was ok. I’m just really surprised you were able to catch air with that ARB.
