Hello, I've read many of the weird door lock threads but mine seems to be a bit different . . . Here's the long story:
My father-in-law has a 2000 LC, which I covet and hope to own someday. He is out of town for a while and is letting my high school son drive it. A month or so ago my son called from school and said the key broke off in the ignition. Panicked, I ran right over but found it was just the plastic housing, pulled out the key and used the spare I had -- it doesn't have the push buttons but must must be chipped because it works fine. I bought 2 housings on Amazon, had them cut and switched electronics and they work. I think that was all coincidental to the real problem, which started about a week later: every time we turn the key from "on" to "acc" the doors LOCK instead of UNLOCK.

When I push the lock button on the fob, the red fob light blinks but does not lock the doors.
The unlock button works.

I can see the alarm light solid when locked and blinking when unlocked.
It stops blinking on key insertion.

The truck starts, runs, both door lock buttons work while the engine is running or just with the key in the "on" position, but as soon as the key is turned off, the doors ALL lock AND THE PUSH BUTTONS DO NOT WORK! He has to manually unlock the door to get out.

If I open the door first then turn off the ignition, the doors will lock and then instantaneously unlock.

I cannot use that parking brake/key on/shift/hold button procedure to change the auto lock setting.

I'm pretty experienced and should be able to fix whatever it is, but the strange way things work at different times has me confused. My father-in-law will be back in 3 weeks and I'd like to have it done or he'll take it to the dealer and sink God knows how much into it. Any advice will be appreciated.

Unfortunately the problem is the same with all 3 keys -- 2 with push button fobs and the one with a solid housing.

That didn't work either. Tomorrow I will disconnect the key cylinders in the doors and see if anything changes.

This has been resolved, but I'm not sure how. Sunday, I disconnected the battery and let it sit for 30+ minutes, but nothing changed, so I took off the tailgate and driver's door panels and disconnected all the wires. Same. I didn't have time to do the passenger door, so I told my son he'll just have to go to school with the panels off. He took it out Sunday evening and the problem stayed the same all day Monday and Tuesday morning, but yesterday afternoon he sent me a text saying it stopped auto-locking. It worked last night and is working this morning.

As an engineer, mechanic and self-employed machinist, I am disinclined to believe that letting something sit for a while is a real solution, but I don't know enough of key/ECU communication to say anything. I told him that there was a daemon trapped in that plastic seal and it took a day for it to find it's way out. More likely is that he left the window open and it took some time to dry, but that has been denied.
