I have an early 1980 FJ40. I am doing a desmog while I am installing a header because all the sh%* is in my way, breaking, or just a general pain in the ass. Anyway........I am trying to figure out what to do with my smog pump. SOR offers the pulley replacement which is noted to fit 8/80 and later cruisers. Does anyone know the difference on the smog pumps from the early '80 to the later '80. I found a good deal on a used SOR pulley, and would like to install it if the pulley can be retrofitted without too much effort. Any info? The alternative I was thinking of would be to simply leave the smog pump hooked up and pipe the output to high dry area in the engine bay.

I'll toss out two other options to $OR. First, Jim C (FJ40JIM) sells a version if you are not up to making your own. Search for it. Second, here is a pic of the one I made if you can make your own. Pulley is a boneyard PS idler from a FJ62, but I think any 60-series PS idler will work (not AC idler). Adjuster was OEM smog pump. The only thing I would do different is center the pulley more on the bar.

Unless you have power steering? you don't need the pump. If you have P/S just gut-out the pump and use it as a idler:idea:

Yea, I tried to get with JimC by phone and email, but I got no response. I don't have the equipment to fab up a pulley such as that. I guess I will gut it.....I was just trying to save it in case for some reason I needed to "resmog" in the future.

I gutted the pump tonight. It is straight forward if anyone is considering it. The internal workings unbolt and drop right out.

Yea, 40 year old TSB:cool:
