According to this post by Augie, it takes about 10- 15 minutes to view the timing belt and see if it looks worn.

FWIW, I just bought a 2000 LC with 108K for $11.2 from a private party. It needed the TB, etc. It's in good shape otherwise. I spent about $450 from C Dan for the TB, water pump, serpentine belt, pulleys, and silver badging (don't like the gold). I like it

Thanks, LC! I read the thread last night. I figured I would do the same, it doesn't seem to be to complicated just time consuming. I guess I might as well try to get up her skirt ASAP and get my knuckles dirty.

the problem with looking at it is that you can probably see if it's bad, but you probably can't see if it's good. So, you're not that much better off.
Sounds like you replaced yours. Did it look bad? :)

One other question I have, would you consider an extended warranty with it. I was told they offer a 3yr/36k warranty for $1600 that covers the power-train. I'm not concerned with the engine but I didn't know about any of the other components.

All aftermarket warranties are not created equal; when I sold cars the company we used (who will remain nameless) was absolutely terrible and would fight tooth & nail to get out of paying for anything. Put me in a horrible position between them & my customer on a few occasions.

If you're considering it, do some heavy research on the warranty company before you pull the trigger. Personally, I'd pass...

I've never bought an extended warranty but then I've also never bought this type of vehicle either. I always considered them a waste of money that could have been used if something does go wrong. It seems one way or another they will make you pay. I was just wanting a couple of opinions though.
Thanks!

I'd also be concerned about if the tranny is one of the 2000 models that was faulty.
But at 116k, that prolly would have appeared by now. Just make sure it shifts smoothly on the test drive.
Hopefully it's not that Smokey Topaz color, they all will have major paint problems requiring a repaint eventually. If it looks good now, then it hasn't seen the sun much or the repaint has already been done.
Is it a southern LC, that would be nice.

Dont you dare talk about my color that way! Hes looking at a LC anyways not a LX but Lexus will still warranty the paint if you ask nicely.

dries, good luck on the recon mission with the PO.

In general, I would only consider an actual Toyota warranty and then probably not for a low cost vehicle in any case. Anyway, you probably can't get a Toyota warranty for that age and mileage of a LC.

I did replace mine (actually I paid a mechanic I know to do it :D). It looked worn in a few spots around the edges and was cracked all around the entire outer surface. I can post up pics if anyone wants to see it. I would say (in my uneducated opinion) that it had some miles left in it- but stupid to risk it IMO.

I don't want to tell what you should offer but, I picked up a 2000 for about that price last month. Regardless of the timing belt I think is a good deal. 11k is what they are going for at our local auction house. For about 300-600 dollars, you can have the belt redone. Put some 285/75 BFG A/T on it and take off the running boards and you're on you way to a great off road Cruiser.

Great News!!!! I just got off the phone with the PO, he was a super nice guy and it was his wife's car. The starter changed 12/07, brakes 02/07 and TIMING BELT 12/07, all as scheduled. He runs synthetic in it and offered to provide me with the service records. I guess it can't get any better than that. Oh, I will be picking it up Friday! Thanks for all the input and advice. Pics to follow...

Outstanding! Great news!

As for the extended warranty, yeah make sure to be careful if you do buy it, just do your research on the company. I might consider it for the 2000 if the exhaust manifolds have not been replaced yet, my understanding is it's a matter of when not if the exhaust leak shows up, and the labor is not cheap.

My personal experience with an extended warranty was well worth the money I paid. It was the only time I have had an extended warranty (out of many used cars), it was a Ford. The piece that holds the twin I beam suspension together on the front end cracked almost in half, very scary. The shop fixed it no hassle and even installed polyurethane bushings for me when they put it back to gether (at no extra cost).

Like many others, I’ve lurked in the darkness, reading much of my time here but it has made me obsessed with wanting a LC. So I posted my 2006 Ford FX4 truck on craigslist and sold it in one day. The guy is picking it up Wednesday. I started looking for LC and found a 2000 at a dealer, needs new tires soon and the exterior/interior are in great shape. Any suggestions would be great!
