did the "tach dash" upgrade.

got the cluster from pirate, was from a v6 auto. so basically the wiring diagram said that its a plug and play. aside from needing the oil pressure sender (thanks jerod).

i advise unplugging the oil sender as the very first operation. if you plug a pressure gauge into and idiot light sender, you can have a smoked gauge.

the tach adjustment is easy. the 3rd gen dash tach has a little potentiometer already built in. so all you need to do is hook up a hand held tach, hook up the new dash and adjust it to match.

the potentiometer info came from pirate, sorry no link, but this is the same.
i was able to pull the cover off the cluster so i could remove the tach for pics. after pics and marking the potentiometer for reference i put it back together without the cover and ran it and adjusted it while assembled. barely had to move it as the pics show.

so of course in typical "me" style, i get the dash totally reassembled and cant get the speedo cable to plug in. so after flailing for like 10 mins i pull it back out.
i guess you learn something every day. for some reason the new cluster had a weird cover adapter or something where the cable goes on.
making the nipple to big for my cable.
check a 2nd gen 4wd cable and was the same as my mini. so after some looking, it appears that this piece comes off. i broke it off, of course.

got her finished and everything works as it should. i absolutely love having a tach and trip meter. it was making me crazy writing down my miles, and i drive a lot from the tach too, especially with quiet stock exhaust.

came up with this searching 91 v6 hilux. 83242 35080 shows to be a 4cyl and 6cyl tach.

83242‑35060 is showing for late model 92-95 4cyl (part num diff because its factory adjusted?)

searching 91 hilux 4cyl 83242‑89524 is the early, pre 91 4cyl tach

now this is only my speculation, but it appears that with the changes that toyota did for the 91 ML included using a generic, if you will, tach. prior to the 91 ML there are two different part numbers.

again this is mostly speculation.

so in a short answer J, i think yes if you get a late 91-95 cluster.

And it's a really nice big Tach with a good "sweep". I'll bet you sat there for awhile revving it up and down just to watch it huh? I like the horizontal layout of those other gauges(oil and water). I also finally recieved that Mazda MPV service manual on disc if you think you might need it someday we can make some copies for your "library".

By the way Aric, I meant to loan you my extra mower so you could "mow" that trailer across the street from you.

my last tank said 21 MPG. hoping with the new speedo it will be a bit better, the speedo is within 1-2 MPH, my old was over 5MPH off.

I've been bummed that I'm down to 21 to 23 in my 90 2wd, with winter tires. I get up to 27 in the summer and on the freeway. I was thinking a stick would do better but I have a 32 mile commute to work. Still better than a 'cruiser.
