Hey guys
Love this site so much you guys have been so much help :)

So I’m still looking for an fj of some type, and believe I’ve come across the one of my dreams, although it is petrol not diesel. Although the price is nice ($3750 AU)

Just got a couple of questions,

Is this a 1976 HJ45 ?

This might seem a dumb question but is that aircon in the cabin?

What type engine is this?

It does have Oil leak on sump, so does that mean major problems?

And finally how many L per 100k (MPG) would I be expecting ?

Thanks guys

Ryan

G'day Ryan,

You found an 'FJ of some type'. This is an FJ45 (petrol with either an F or 2F engine), not an HJ45 (diesel with an H engine) or an HJ47 (diesel with a 2H engine). 1976 looks like the right year.

This rig does not have air con (that is a heater only - but unless it is clogged, it will work really well.. depending on where in NSW you live, that may or may not be an advantage).

The engine is a 2F petrol which does not appear to be on gas (an easy conversion for about au$2,000 - $4,000 minus government rebate).

The leak in the sump (oil pan) is a very minor deal on this engine as the gasket can be replaced with the engine still in the rig. It is also very common on this engine because it is a massive sump and will develop leaks over time if the bolts are not tightened regularly.

Fuel economy: probably about 10-12 miles per US gallon or about 17 or 18 litres per hundred kilometres - she's thirsty. In Australia, that means a petrol bill of around 37 cents per kilometre - that's before the carbon tax kicks in. You can add 20% or more to that number when that happens.

This rig also has drum front brakes and no booster, so you will get a workout stopping her. She also has Armstrong power steering - which means she has no power steering, so you will have little need for the gym after a day of city driving.

Otherwise, the rig looks very clean. If you flip that bezel around the right way, it will be in almost perfect nick:grinpimp:

Cheers,

Josh

Thanks for the quick response mate :)

Ive never thought of putting gas on one, Do many people convert these cars to gas? Would you lose performance?

I do a lot a fair bit of driving on unsealed roads, are gas systems more susceptible to damage?

Also seeing it’s already got along range fuel tank would it fit?

Oh its only got 133 000k on the clock to :)

Cheers

I've had gas on mine for years and it is just fine. I take mine to the Flinders Ranges regularly, but it is sometimes hard to get gas in the bush - then I just switch to petrol.

They normally put the gas tank where the spare tyre is, and your long range tank is likely in the centre of the frame behind the transmission so I'd say it would probably fit. That will increase your range even more.

You do lose performance a bit with gas, as it only has about 70% of the BTUs that petrol does. I use about 30% more gas than petrol, so I get about 9 miles per US gallon or 21 - 22 litres per hundred kilometres. However, it usually costs about half what petrol does, so you save a few quid in the long run. It does have more power on petrol, but it's hardly noticeable.

If you get that ute, keep it nice. It is only going to go up in value if you keep it in good nick.... oh yes, and flip that damned bezel right-side-up:D

Cheers,

Josh

that seams adding gas is the way to go

Ive made an offer to the seller for the rig so just waiting to hear back from him. very excited about hopefully owning my first FJ :)

Got one more question for you, how long would it take / what do you have to tighten to fix a leak in the sump? as i live in QLD not NSW just found out a NSW Road worthy doesn't count in QLD and need to get another. want to make shore there is nothing they can fail me on

cheers mate and thanks again for your help

Ryan

Hi, if the sale falls through I am considering selling my HJ45. I live in Queensland. Price would be a fair bit more though.
