Just thought I'd share a few pics for people who are interested in the diffs on these as compared to the 8" diff. I haven't seen a lot of side by side pictures comparing them. So... here you go.

Rear 8.2 on the left 3.73 pinion vs 4.10 8" pinion right. There's a huge difference between the two pinions, especially the size of that pinion bearing. Also the shaft size on is ~1.575 on the 8.2 vs 1.375 on the 8".

Here's a ring gear, top is the 8.2, bottom is the 8". The 8.2 is slightly larger and the carrier mounting face is larger. It uses 12 bolts to the carrier and the diameter of the spacing on the bolts is larger.

Finally - I was kinda surprised how shallow the pinion depth is. This is the wear pattern from my OEM rear 8.2.

Here's an 8" clamshell reverse pinion compared to a 4cyl 8" pinion

And 8" vs 8" clamshell carrier. Other than the larger bearings - they appear very similar.

Cool. Thanks for sharing. That 8.2 pinion is significantly beefier. And the taper on the bearings is at a much larger angle. Good to see Toyota trending a bit toward a stronger rear, especially with some of the challenges with early 8" diffs on the FJ Cruisers and Tacomas.

Are you regearing a 4Runner or GX? Wondering why you've got the diffs disassembled.

Yes. Re-gearing. I'm adding an ARB front locker and I have 34" tires and tow a camp trailer frequently in the summer. I figured that if I was going to do it, I might as well do the gears together. I was hoping that it would help towing mostly. I would much rather have gone to a 4.10 or 4.30 gear set if they were available. I did my own re-gear on the clamshell using a spare housing. It was a lot of work to assemble and re-assemble about a dozen times.

Since I am running out of time to get ready for Cruise Moab I hired a local shop to do the rear and I'm not super happy with it right now. I wanted it done with plenty of time for a break in period before the trip. Unfortunately I'm actually getting some gear noise from it that isn't making me feel warm and fuzzy. Kinda regret going with an unknown (to me) shop for this based on good online reviews. Everyone claims to be a pro at diff setups. Few are. The shop owner mentioned using an impact on the crush sleeve when I picked it up and that threw up a big red flag for me. I can see using one to get started, but it's very easy to over-preload that way and if you back it off then you've just ruined the sleeve and should start over. I'm wishing i had just done it myself. I'm not a pro, but what I lack in skill I make up for in being anal about it being right and tenacity to swap shims as many times as it takes to get it done. I'm probably going to have to pull the rear diff at a minimum and check the specs. If they're all good and it's noisy - that's on me. I brought them the gears I ordered. If they did a s*** job of setup - then we'll have a chat about it. I don't know yet. The rear isn't very hard to do right so I wasn't so concerned about it.

In retrospect I wish I had simply ordered the rear from one of the folks who does the exchange. Anyway that's where it's at right now. It's not howling or anything. Just audible over the sound of all terrain tires. I don't know how much noise is acceptable for aftermarket gears. I've never had an issue in previous vehicles. But I've also run big mud tires, so I'd never hear it anyway.

I am not sure if this a same comparison but I replaced all the gears in the tranny of my GTR for a build. The way the gear is cut, you can hear the whine from the gears. If it is aftermarket then I think it is normal.
