The brakes just got soft on my 88 FJ62. Any thoughts as to where I should start? Could air have gotten into the line just like that? Cracked hose? Master brake cylinder? Also, my emergency brake light will not go off. Arrrgh.

Fluid low? You should flush the system every few years anyway. So try a flush.;)

I just went through this on my 60 this past weekend. The hand brake light would be slow to go off or not at all. Once all the shoes and pads were replaced and properly adjusted, the hand brake light went back to working properly.

In retrospect, I believe the sticky brake light signals it is time to R&R the brakes.

If it has never been changed it could be the master cylinder. Changed a few of them on my 62. Rebuilds are pretty cheap.

Start simple. Check all of your soft lines for cracking, seepage, etc. as well as the rear wheel cylinders for leaks.

The brake light will come on as the fluid level in the reservoir drops below the minimum mark. This is because of pad/shoes wear which would require more fluid in the lines to stop the truck, or if it is leaking out somewhere. Remember, the fluid has to go somewhere.

If the brakes are soft it is most likely seeping/leaking out somewhere and air is entering in its place. If the pedal travel is just lore than usual it could be just the rears needing adjustment as they wear more.
 
As suggested far above, if you don't know when the system was last flushed then a good way to do the excellent inspection that chitown suggests is while flushing the system. Basically bleed the brakes, in the FSM recommended order, until you get clean, clear fluid at each bleed nipple. While you're doing that look over each component of the brakes.
