So What ODB Software and Connector do I use?

I have just got myself a 1999 VX Limited (Japanese Domestic Model) it is a HDJ101. Question is what kind of ODB software and connector do I need to hook up a laptop? Some of the local mechanics say that it needs different software to the UK models because it was made for the domestic japanese market? I would have thought it would be the same worldwide for a particular model. Anyone got any pointers?
