Hey everyone,
I need new tires for my 79 4x4 p/u (It still has 1 orig Dunlop tire on it!). The truck will be used for plowing and it will see limited time on the road (so I don't care about noise!). Right now it has 235/75/15's on it. Should I stay with that size or go up? Could I fit 31x15.0x15's? So what size should I run, and what is the best tire for plowing?

Thanks,
Zack

My 83 had 31x10.50s on stock rims when I bought it. Seemed to work ok, but you'll have some power loss. If that's not a concern then you should be fine. If I were only using it as a plow truck, I would stick with the 235s or maybe a 30x9.50.

31s fit nicely, but a 32 inch tire is the biggest you can go w/o rubbing, and even that depends on the individual tire. ie swampers rub, ATs don't. You will lose a lot of power with that 20R if you move up from the 235s. It will still go from A to B but it will be slow. Your best bet if you want bigger tires and this isn't going to be a DD is to put a set of gears in it and the 31/32 inch tires.
Good Luck,
Dan

The 79-80 years have 4.38 gears. I had 31x10.50 15's on 8 inch wheels on my '80 RN47. They slowed it down some but really filled the wheel openings well.
