So is the general feeling to bypass the orig PS cooler?

Hey everyone,
Sorry about all the F'ing PS posts lately but I have just dropped a lot of cash on the NEW pump and I want it to last! So as the GR8DOUGHBOY posted in my other thread, he bypassed the the orig PS cooler in favor of a trans cooler for a small car? So after 245,000 miles do you think my PS cooler is bad? Is there a way to check it? I would much rather keep it stock, but again I don't want to F'up the new Toyota pump? If I should bypass it does some have any specific directions as to where to mount the cooler, and how to run the lines again so that I can pass the info on to my mechanic.

Thank you,
Zack

Just use the stock PS cooler. 245,000 miles is a good long life for a stock pump..

Well no the pump did not last 245,000 miles, the pump that is in there is a s***ty rebuilt pump that never worked right from day 1 ! So now Got the OEM Toyota pump. The pump that is in there is VERY VERY FAWKED UP, to the point that the pully is about to fall off because the shaft is about to break off the pump! I am just nervous that there is metal shavings or other s*** in the cooler and I don't want that to get in my new pump. Is there a way to flush out the cooler before I get the new pump in?

Thanks,
Zack

the "cooler" is a piece of tubing.. Have your mechanic blow it out.

Very easy..

I would be more worried about the PS box having particles in it than the lines...

So is there a way to ensure that the steering box is clean? CAn That be flushed?

Thank you,
Zack

Hell at this point I might as well just get a new "cooler" tube. Do you know if that par t is expensive from Toyota?

Thank you,
Zack

To flush the steering box I'd guess you'd have to pull the return line off after you fill the reservoir & pour in fluid while someone turns the steering wheel lock to lock with the engine running. There are usually filters in power steering racks - don't know if there's one in the FJ. Easy to install, though.
