I've been watching that thread too waiting to see if its worth getting one or not. Hard to justify almost $400 for the Safari one. Also not sure if it will fit in my garage although it looks like it doesn't sit much higher than the roof rack.

Samuel, I probably shouldn't have bought this as I have been thinking I really need to get a dual battery system but for the price and everyone seems to really like theres alot I thought pull the trigger... My list is to big for my wallet :princess: will not be happy when this shows up at the door.

Just got one. $190 is two tanks of gas anymore. Looks fairly easy to install although I have an amazing ability to screw up the simple things especially when they involve cosmetics like paint. Hopefully I can get it installed by the time we go to Tuttle in May.

Good deal! I am the same way I am pretty good at screwing things up I like to try and be handy but then it seems somehow I screw it up.

-Maybe we should try and have a group get-together work day

That would be fun, the question is who has to drive where. You're in Lexington right? I'm looking to extend all my breather lines too, already have all my electrical connections taken apart and coated with dialectric grease.

I've got a garage with your basic simple hand tools, its hardly a magnificence workshop. I will be buying a hole saw if you want to borrow it to do your snorkel. Planning on taking a last minute trip to tuttle this Saturday if anyone is interested. Looks like they got a lot of rain today so it should be a good time.

Yeah I might have to borrow the hole saw, I would love to have it installed before the trip to tuttle but I don't see that happening.

Should be here any day now, I am sure you will more then likely get yours a day before I do. :frown:

The FedEx man just dropped mine off today. Looks like a quality unit. Should be able to get it installed some night this week.

Also not sure if it will fit in my garage although it looks like it doesn't sit much higher than the roof rack.

Mine sits an inch shorter than the highest point of my roof line - I don't have a roof rack. It's a bit deceptive in pictures, but they really don't sit nearly as high as you'd think.

I'd be interested in comparing my Safari snorkel directly to the knock-off ones. I wonder if we'd be able to tell the difference.

As to why buy a $400 Safari snorkel instead of the $190 one that is a direct copy - there may be a quality difference, but there is also something to the idea of supporting the actual innovator of a product vs a company that copies their design and undercuts them.

The $190 copy wasn't much of an option back when I bought mine. There were fiberglass copies available - they even had the Safari logo on them, but they came without mounting hardware, no template, etc... Hopefully the one you guys bought is a better kit than the initial knock-offs were.

Should be fun!

The reason I pulled the trigger is because everyone in the thread I posted gave it pretty good reviews. If it starts to fade I would probably take it in to get rhino-lined to match my roof. I looked over your snorkel when we first met Mark just real quick so I can't really say how it compares... but I think it is quality, only time will tell. It looks like all the bits and pieces are all there.

Could you flip it over? I'm assuming there are captured nuts there for a set of studs to sit in?

Once you get the air cleaner and the little resonator out of the way, get out some metal flashing tape or similar and tape the edges of the opening into the fender that your arm is going through. Feel all the way around it - carefully. I found a metal barb on the inside of the hole on mine via the 1/2" gash that it cut 3/4 the way to my elbow.

Drilling through the fender. You'll drill a pilot hole first - then you'll line up with the hole saw - then you'll realize that the fender isn't flat where you need to drill through with the saw. The big hole sits right on a crease. Go real slow - that hole saw is going to bind up every so often. Keep a real strong grip on it or it will throw you around (depending on the drill's strength.)

Find a 4" long ratchet wrench or a slightly offset gear wrench to work inside the fender. Take the time to tie a piece of twine onto it. Either tie the other end to your wrist OR another tool that sits on the garage floor while you work. Drop that wrench into the fender and you'll be spending the next 30 minutes with a magnet trying to catch a mildly magnetic attracted wrench from between two highly magnetic attracted fender walls.

Secret to getting that farthest washer & nut on... Use a thick RTV type product on the threads so that when you put the snorkel onto the truck it forces some through to inside the fender - this gives enough 'sticky' to help hold the washer in place while you put on the nut.

The mounting hardware that came for the A pillar on mine consisted of a mounting tab that needed a pair of square holes cut precisely into the pillar. I did it per the instructions. If I were to do it again, I'd go buy properly sized nutserts and use round holes.

I can't think of any other tips off the top of my head. It's a fun install. Once you're done you'll get lots of puzzled looks from people at gas stations. If your significant other drives your truck, strange men will approach them in parking lots asking about the snorkel. I get FAR More people curious about that one particular bit than any of the other mods on my truck. 2nd place is the high lift jack on the back (it's in a cover).

It's a fun install.

You must not know me very well, all my installs are difficult and have me thinking I should sell the truck at some point untill I am finished (which takes me 2-3x longer then most) and then once it is all done (usually after midnight) I fall in love with the truck all over again :hillbilly:

It will be interesting for sure. I will snap some pictures at lunch for you. But just like you said there are captured nuts on the other side. I'll open the bag up and snap a pic as well.

A few differences are showing up...

My captured nuts were 'brassy' looking - like grade 8 hardware looks, but probably not grade 8. They were also larger inside diameter - looking at those pins, washers and nuts for scale. I want to say that the studs were 3/8" dia and around 1.25" long on the Safari. I don't know if this will make a difference in the end - but it's a way to identify differences in the kits.

Whats with the pop rivets? Or are they rivserts for the A pillar instead of the PITA square-hole inserts?

The drier hose clamps are the same. :hillbilly:

Well, after I saw 98 Snake Eater thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/583983-my-fleabay-dorkel-install.html, on lining his snorkel I thought just in case the UV protectent is not in the plastic I would take it to my shop here in town and have them line it.

Everything I take something in there the guy has a look on his face

Samuel, have you started your install yet???

I was able to get the everything installed on Saturday. Fits up and looks good to me. Took me about 3 hours or so. I'm already starting to get tired of the question "what's that for." Now I'm working on venting the distributor. Currently the mere sight of water makes my FJ80 think it needs to stall out.

That is:
A fishing pole holder.
A rifle holster.
A siren.
Weather radar for storm chasing.
An ultra long-distance wifi antenna.
An extra exhaust pipe.
A train horn.
A super oxyhydrone radar detector.
An air quality sampling device.
A gas leak detector.
A water cannon.

Yeah - I got bored explaining the whole concept of snorkel a few years ago.

Before even bothering with the distributor, extend your axle breathers and check your quarter panels for rust and other holes. Work the water sealing from the ground up.
