I figured I'd start my own thread since I have a TON of pix....

With all the talk of the cheap snorkels not holding up to UV exposure, I decided to bed line mine...

Only shot the top half of the hat as I'm curious to see the difference of how it holds up over time....

Made sure I had all the parts on hand...

Removed the signal lamp...

dorkelinstll1.JPG

Removed the air cleaner assembly...

dorkelinstll2.JPG

Removed the bolts for the Cruise Control and relocated washer to access the nuts for the inner fender air tube assembly and yanked it out the front of the fender....

Picked up a new 4" hole saw from Ace...

dorkelinstll7.JPG

It's larger than recommended, but if you've ever used a hole saw before, you know you have one shot at it and expanding a small hole after drilling is a major PITA

It's only slightly larger and worked well.

Used a spring loded center punch to mark the pilot and it was about 3/8" below the fender line.

Mounted the hole saw on my trusty HF wrist snapper and went to town...

Cleaned up the edges with some coarse sand paper

Cut out the hole on the template using a razor blade...

dorkelinstll21.JPG

dorkelinstll22.JPG

Marked the exact position of the template using tape and removed it...

dorkelinstll23.JPG

Mounted the template on the dorkel itself and screwed in the studs to check bolt positions..

They were only slightly off, so I used a Uni-Bit to step each hole until the dorkel slid in place for a test fit.

Marked the A-Pillar bracket using tape.

dorkelinstll30.JPG

Used some touch up paint on all the holes.

Marked the holes to be drilled for the bracket using the spring loaded center punch...

Tightened up the nuts, added the head and buttoned everything up in the reverse order...

Unfortunately, I don't have my antenna nut kit on hand and I don't want to chance mucking up the nut or finish using a needle nose, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to remove the antenna so I can access the last two studs...

No need to modify for clearance...

snork

Thanks for posting those photos. Really nice job. What brand of liner did you use? Mine is coming next week and I plan on spraying mine as well.

Very nice, gives me some confidence for when my EBay snorkel arrives.

Yeah, that almost makes drilling that big ol' hole in the fender look easy...chilling:eek:

Little update...

I wasn't able to reach the last two studs last night because I didn't have my antenna nut tool on hand

Got it from home and tore into it again

After dropping the antenna, I could reach the rear lower stud with ease

However, I could just barely touch the rear upper stud with my finger, so I put a piece of tape on the washer and stuck it in place, then I put the nut in the gear wrench and used a piece of tape to hold it in place and tied some fishing line to the wrench in case I drop it

Got it done quickly, but my arm still looked like this afterward

Some day shots

I didn't think of the fishing line when I did mine and of course. . .

I dropped it

After 20 minutes of trying to reach the wrench with anything I could think of I realized the fender is open at the bottom:bang:
I reached from underneath just in front of the door and it was sitting right there - took 10 seconds:meh:

At least you had an advanced plan in place!

Man you really need to get some more accessories that truck is bare! :steer::clap:

Should've done it half beige/half black.... you have way too much time on your hands... nice prep/ and documenting
