chains, chains - the only way to go!

For Rud chains I would call Rud and see if there are any local retailers near you. 800-553-7993. I just ordered some somewhat locally and saved a little bit compared to the price from Bill Burke.

x2

but it's safer for them to be on the rear tires or all four tires. ;)

For steep hills around my house chains up front work better for steering and hence safer!:) But, nothing beats all around!

Well I ordered a pair from the link to stash in the truck w/ I hit the snow. Thanks everyone for the real-world info.

One thing- the whole front or rear debate: I can see how rear is good (don't fishtail, suv rear is light) but wouldn't the front be better (braking, turning)? From what I remember on icey roads, where I lost control is from the lack of braking (sliding) and lack of steering (like a turn in the road, but you keep going straight).

Anyway, I don't expect to use the chains actually (which is why I only got a pair) but wanted something for a 'worst case'. I don't think my ego would take it if the Cruiser got stuck! LOL

All 4 are safer. Also depends on your Provincial or State Laws. Don't know about other Provinces but in BC it is against the law to run chains on the front only. You can run them on the rear only but if you run them on the front you must run them on the rear too.

Little info from a Newbie.

straight from the horse's mouth ;)

Getting back to your first "One thing- the whole front or rear debate:" The main reason for chains on the rear is stopping. Better to have no steering in the front than have your ass end pass you at a bit of speed. With chains on the front only, the slightest bit of braking will cause the front to grip immediately & the rear to break free giving the ass end no choice but to pass you. Bad enough on a level surface & 10 fold going down hill where you're more apt to be using your brakes.

Stay safe.

correction from tirechains.com

"Chains must be installed on the drive wheels. Make sure you know if your vehicle is front or rear wheel drive. "
