Snails crawl going up hill

I've been driving around a '94 today and the difference in acceleration between it and my other two 80's is astounding. I can see where Tony is coming from now having experienced it myself. This thing is truly a different animal....holy cow.

How so? Are you supercharged?

To clarify, I was holding 55 on the hills with no problems. The 36 mph incident was when the water truck in front of me in the middle of the hill decided to exit the freeway in a construction zone. I was running about 10 mph by the time he got out of the way then I tried to regain speed without blowing the engine. I had no idea since I am new to 80's that I could get to the 4000 rpm range safely. Plus having close to 70 gallons of gas, 2 5 gallon water jugs in the vehicle I am sure did not help matters.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Gotmud! ;-)

I felt your pain. 212hp just isn't going to pull 6K bricks up freeway grades without a fight.
Add a lift, oversize tires (did you regear? If not, that's even worse) and load it down... if you loose momentum, it just sucks. It sucks anyway thrashing the engine just to keep moving but if someone cuts you off, there is no hope!

The SC cured that. It does make driveability much better, it does feel like a different truck.
It also helps power at higher altitude when the air thins out.

Intercooled, the SC temps are cooler than stock. You can still have cooling issues unrelated to the SC, just like any other 80 though.

As above, don't worry so much. don't worry about the revs as long as they're below the red line and use all of the throttle travel.

I haven't driven an auto gas 80 very far but there should be no need to worry about using the shifter. At full throttle the gearbox should downshift as needed to keep the revs up where the power is. The only time going uphill you should need to touch the shifter is if its hunting up and down between 2 gears...

My diesel 80 does 4k rpm quite often with no issues so your 24v dohc gas engine will be fine. In fact I'm pretty sure the max power output is up at about about 4600 rpm. Anyone know the max rated rpm?

First Toy, are you intercooled?

AZTony, TRD suggests best performance on 95-97 LC. From what I hear, 93-94 dont really take advantage of the SC.

Time to drop in a 5.7!

My buddy has kids that use his Tundra with a 5.7 and I keep telling him I want first dibs when they wreck the truck. He says I am cursing him but I am looking at reality!!

This last weekend I drove up and then back from Sedona. The secret is NEVER letting your speed/rpm get that low. If you get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle and are unable to get your speed up on the approach to the hill then your screwed.

lol, x2, If I keep my pace up Im OK. OK as is still trucking along, not fast or quick, but just moving faster than the semi's, etc. Drop that pace and game over until the next chance....

x3...Getting a run at it I make 55 - 65 up same hill, if I don't have to slow down. Once slowed down by a big rig or slow driver, it's all over.

Tony, come by and drive my 92. You'll appreciate the power you have! :p

I am going to Sonic Friday (if I have all my work done) so everyone can laugh at me...
