So after a romp through the mud with a buddy in Utah, I drive the 4 hours home with no problem. I get it all washed up the next day, start it up to move it to a more convenient spot on the driveway and it starts smoking from the engine compartment. Not alot of smoke, and it smells funny. It seems to be coming from either the power steering pump, or the thing just below it that also has a belt running to it. (is that the air pump?) Could I have just filled it too full and I'm geeking out over nothing? Maybe if I desmogged I could see everything better.

I would put money on a frozen smog pump pulley. Did it smell like burning rubber?

Maybe... It kinda did... I'll have to try it again first thing in the morning.

Last time I has smoke from there my inner axle seal was toast and the smoke was from greaseoil on my rotor being heated up from the brakes.

Not saying this is it, just check your knuckle for goop.

This is my first thought.

My second thought is that you washed oily mud down into the aluminum sleeve the goes around the little pipe that comes up from your exhaust pipe. The oily mud is getting hot and cooking the crap out of things.

Just a guess though.

I vividly remember changing out a smog pump on a buddy's rig because he had driven through a mud hole too quickly and the smog pump sucked in all kinds of mud and water. I remember being soooo pissed because I wasn't expecting it to be full of, well anything, and after turning it upside down to look in the ports, I got oily mud all over my pants, haha. Good times.

Easy test - have someone crank the engine and see if the smog pump pulley is spinning or not. If not, then you're right there to see where it's smoking from.

Thanks guys, the air pump was frozen. I took it off and apart, and pulled the vanes out (my EGR is dissabled anyway) and it's still seized up. The blasted thing is toast. So I can't use it to freewheel on the belt. Any ideas what to do instead? I'm pretty cheap and getting a new one is not something I want to very bad.

Unless you can fabricate an idler pulley to take it's place, then you'll have to buy either a used smog pump that you can gut and use, or you'll have to buy one of Jim C's idler pulleys. Until then, run the second longest ( I think, if not then the longest ) of the 3 belts from your alt to your water pump and down around your crankshaft pulley. That way you'll be able to drive around until you can come up with something to take the place of your smog pump.

Cool, thanks. I think I'll buy one of Jim's I've seen some of his posts when I searched "desmog" and everyone talks about his stuff. If I run the belt to the alternator I wont have power steering :(, but at least it will get me around. I'll just stay away from the off-road until I get it all fixed. Thanks!

Crud, I sure wish I had an extra Chevy alternator lying around! The old '69 Suburban isn't going anywhere for a while... :D
