Just an FYI to those of you who may need or be needing a Smog Pump in the future.

My A1-Cardone ( less than 5K miles) air pump had a carbon grenade and start making this terrible thumping noise, so I sent a core to Rebuildingfactory.com . $150 + shipping later I received back what seems to be a high-quality rebuild. The thing runs silently, and blows like OE.

Sheesh, anything would be better than the Cardone unit.

Of course, you could still spend $800 for new one from Mr. T !

Thanks for the info. The Cardone I had lasted for about 40k miles. Luckily I had my original on the shelf rebuilt by another vendor, similar to yours, but the vendor I used seems to be out of business now. I purchased a replacment cardone and have it on my shelf, but it's good to know that there is another vendor that will rebuild cores.

I contacted the guy who did your other one - He's still in business, he just stopped doing LC pumps 'cuz (he said) he didn't want to have to buy 50,000 carbons at a time when he was doing so few rebuilds... If I could find a source to buy a couple dozen or so carbons, I'd just do it myself. These things are really simple.

I'm probably going to send the Cardone off to Reb Fact to have a backup. Owner said it does not have to be an OE core.

I have two on the bench waiting for bearings; I was not aware there were other components. What are 'carbons'. Are they required or can a unit be rebuilt with just new bearings? Thanks - Dan

Carbons are the fiber "paddles" that spin and push air. They do wear, as well as age and become brittle. It's up to you if you want to replace 'em. I have not been able to find a retail source of these anywhere.
