ok i cant find and am too lazy. which vaccuum lines do i plug when i bypass mysmog pump. i am pretty sure its about to go. it sounds like a very loud sewing machine or valves clacking. im guessing bearings? anyways since i know i can bypass it from the many threads ive read here. i just need a couple of questions answered. which lines to plug, and how long can i run it like that? seing how a new smog pump is in my future just not the immediate one

Don't worry about plugging vacuum lines...that's not going to make significant difference in how your motor runs. However, if the airpump bearings fail, that will cause signifant problems. Since you plan to replace the smog pump at some point, dont' mess with the rest of the emissions stuff - just leave as is. Instead, figure out what to do about the failing bearing.

Here's my take on this (I've had two smog pumps seize bearings while driving on the freeway - it is exciting.)

First, make sure it's the smog pump bearings. Use a piece of hose to listen carefully to assure yourself that the noise is from the smog pump, not somewhere else.

If you are sure it's the smog pump, then I think you have some choices to make...
1. Remove all three belts, run the A/C belt on the alt/waterpump/main pully. This is the cheapest route, you can drive, but you won't have powersteering. But it's free...

2. Buy a cheapo smog pump from a major chain auto store. It will come with a "lifetime" warrenty - which you will need to use about once every 12-18 months.

3. Buy a low milage used smog pump from cruiserparts.net. It will probably last longer than the "lifetime" pump from a major chain.

4. Buy an OEM smog pump (second mortage recommended) and don't worry about it for another 20 years.

thanks guys.

so theres no adverse affects to running like this for a bit then?

the air pump blows air thru the rail in the cylinder head to raise the exhaust temp and make the cat run at a more efficient temp, esp at low speed. Not having the pump operational, either by removing it or gutting it means you run a bit dirtier until you get to freeway speeds. If you don't have strict smogging where you live, you could get by putting an idler pulley to let you run the stock water pump belt. If smogging comes at you every year, tho, I'd replace the pump with a checker/kragen/whatever lifetime unit...
.02$ worth...

My not be smog pump 'bearings'....

After listening, as suggested above, and if it is your smog pump,
another option is gutting it.

remove pump.
Remove 4 (5?) bolts from back of pump.
Remove back of pump ( easier said than done, but does come off)
Using needle nose pliers, remove carbon vanes (3 of 'em) and their little bearings.
Reassemble pump & place back on engine.

Typically, the carbon vane, surrounded by a thin metal band, deform especially when attacked by PS fluid (and who doesn't have a drippy pump ? ).
The metal band jams up the pump rotator & brings the kit-and-kabodle to a screeching halt.

Can you explain you pot again in english?

My problem is that I am hearing a winning noise periodically while driving. Can this be the Air pump? it seems come and go...I can be driving down the road and evething is quiet then all of a sudden its starts this winning sound which is related to the RPM. Any help would be appreciated.

POST = pot

too late.

it finally came to that screeching halt today. right when i got back in my sixty if front of a house i was looking to rent. it probably looked like i parked there just to work on it to the neighbors:D

but smart me bought an extra a/c belt since i was expecting this so now i got to keep my a/c at least here in summertime. plus it was a bonus to not have to mess with that belt at all:bounce: . oh well i think i might buy a cheapo to last a couple of years till i can just desmog it.

I'd be happy to; which part do you need clarified ?

Take your dead pump out of your truck, study it for a few seconds , re-read the 'pot' it will make sense....
