I did search, lets get that out of the way.;)

There are SOOOOOOOO many smog questions the search didn't help.

It looks like I have fallen prey to the evil drip from above.
i.e. the P/S pump drip.

Q.1: I have found talk about removing just the innards of the pump and getting it back on the road. But no definitive thread. Is this an option, at least in the short term?

Q.2: What is the source of the P/S pump leak (usually) and is it curable or just a L.C.-ism. ( I admit I didn't search this...just thought of the question, but I will.....answers still appreciated.)

And for those of you who are looking for the story.....
First came a momentary squeal 2 days ago.....nothing happened, but the hairs on my neck tingled.
Today.....SQUEAL, then stopped. Hint of smoke from the hood! So I made my first left a pointed home. That is about it.....temp gauge started to go, parked quick.

Under the hood I see radiator overflow working, bubbling belt rubber, and bitter dissapointment. :o
So I packed my messenger bag with the 1&1/2 gal of milk and all the perishables I can cram.....oh and the 13 month old on my shoulders and the 5 yr old in tow. For the long walk home.
MacKenzie's first shoulder ride could have been a lot more enjoyable any where else.

As you all know any and all advice is welcome. Thanks

Ok that is a little wierd... the post below is a smog one.....

There are a few things that can go wrong with the pump.

A. First the vanes can break and become lodged between the housing and the other vanes. The pump will lock up.

b. The second is the bearings can seize. They get hot and worn out and just seize. You will no this if the pump turns freely after about 20 minutes or so of sitting and it turns freely again.

In the "A" situation you can remove the vanes and the guts and the pump will run with no bad effects other than you may not pass smog.

In the "B" situation you can remove the vanes and the guts and the pump and reassemble it. When the bearings heat up it will seize again.

The smoke is from the pulley getting so hot it is actually melting the belt. The belt is trying to turn and the pulley is trying to stop. Friction. When you shut the engine off the heat of the pump radiates through the pulley and tries to melt the belt.

The oil can leak from the "O" ring under the reservoir or the front main seal. It could also be a line leak either your pressure or return line or a loose connection on one of the lines.

Thanks for the speedy reply......

I guess my follow up is..
How re-buildable is the smog pump? There are very extereme mixed reviews on aftermarket. Lets assume I lean towards OEM as long as the cost is justified.

The P/S sounds very fixable. Thanks again on that one.

Woody upgraded it so it will find other posts similar to the title of the post you are looking at.

Do you mean placing it in the FAQ?....I am not sure I understand.

getting an error message.....

Here is the important part of the link.

Some years ago, I sent my smog pump to www.moto-parts.com to be rebuilt. The cost was around $125. You might call them to see if they would sell you just the bearings, or at least tell you what bearings are used.

Mcmaster Carr has a large selection of bearings, SAE and metric sizes. Can you measure your existing bearings and find one that will fit?

The parts microfiche just shows the air pump assembly, but doesn't show any separate repair parts.

D'Animal (or one else for that matter).....ever rebuilt one your self?

I am interested in doing it to get rollin' then poss save for a spare when I have more cash to spend.......wedding coming NO extra money.

worked that time
thanks

There are no parts avaliable from Toyota to rebuild them. They only sell and have only sold the entire assy.

The rebuild shop have thier parts made for them.

If that is still the price, I would be very happy with that.

Thanks again, we will see tomorrow when me and the little one try to nurse it home.

reroute your a/c belt and you can drive it as long as you want without power steering or a/c. ten minute fix to do on the side of the road

When I bought my FJ60 my smog pump during the smog test. My mechanic and I tried 2 different rebuilt ones and it wouldn't pass. I am in LA and I don't knoe if the emmision are more stringent here but he said that the rebuilts never pass. He has an old smog machine in his shop so he's knows wether or not you will pass before it gets sent to the official test. It sucked buying the new one, but no more issues.

you use your ac belt to wrap them both leaving off your smog pump power steering and your ac. cut off or remove the belt running your smog pump and then jsut use your ac belt to run everything else that belt would have.
its a field fix. saved my ass

if your needing a pump and its for the 62, I just have a good one

I forgot to mention that didn't I......its for the 60. Thank you though.

I DO NOT have the P/S leak and I'm on my 3rd pump......

1st one lasted 240,000+ miles, seized on the smog dyno(that sucked)

2nd one from Napa($80) seized not very much later, way less than 1000 miles, limped home(not far), it overheated but didn't damage anything

3rd one from Carquest is starting to make noise like it's gonna go, wife won't ride in it, can't go to the desert this weekend 'cause she thinks it won't make it(she's probably right)

I carry my Warranty replacement one from Napa but don't really want to do a roadside repair, even though I'm gettin' good at it....

I'm gonna start my V8 swap soon so I don't want to put it on, I'd like to get the pump elimiator bracket and just remove the pump for now

and I'd like to sell my Napa pump un-used

from what I understand the factory one is $700 or something crazy like that
