I need a smaller wheel (15"ish) for legroom and want to stay with Toyota - no aftermarket. (I just built a DIY electric power steering for my 78 FJ40 so smaller diameter OK.)

A late FJ40 would be ideal but there are actually some late 80s wheels that look OK. I don't want that "angular/" wheel from the early 80s that was on some Landcruisers. Gray or black - no brown or blue. Pictures would probably be best as there are a variety of wheels and I'm a Toyota "newbie" and don't know all the series/years and styles of wheels. I understand I may have to bend the horn contact slightly and drill two 1/8 holes for the roll pins to enable the turn signal cancel. Shipping to Chicago 60614.

Thanks!

Don't believe the late model 4X series were any different diameter then the 73-80 model steering wheel. I have a few, the newest being off a 84. It measures about 17". FJ60 (81-87) are a little over 16". About the same on the FJ62 (88-90). Early 80 series (91-94) a little under 16" but would be closer to the chest of the driver. After 94 the steering wheel would have a air bag. Not sure which ones but some of the eighties Toyotas had a smaller diameter steering wheel.

Late 40s with PS had a smaller wheel. However they usually cost a mint. I've been looking for one on and off for a few years. When they come up they are usually 350-500. There is one in the FS section with a column for 250. I PM'd the guy but didn't here back so I'm assuming it is sold. I think a mini truck wheel might be a good one. I have friends who have used FJ60 and FJ62 wheels. I have a few FJ60 wheels if that would interest you. They are 15.3" I think, I could be wrong I'm going from memory. $30 plus actual shipping. The big problem with 80 wheels is they have a different canceling system for the turn signals. And they were built deeper.

Only part number for any 8/80+ steering wheel I could find is 45100-60090 and that includes models I've searched that have power steering. Do you have anymore info on these smaller steering wheels? While I don't own any 8/80+ 40 series I have four of the steering wheels and they are all the same size. I don't know the history of all the wheels, possible they may have been from manual steering. I know someone selling a Australian market 84 pickup with power steering. If it hasn't sold I could have him measure it.

The measurements I gave yesterday were from wheels I just looked at. The 60 series wheel is larger then 16".

I searched SOR's site and they do not show a different steering wheel for power steering. Search by Part Number 098-100 As far as I know the only difference in the power steering on the 8/80+ steering column is the lower shaft is shorter. The rest of the column including the steering wheel is the same.:meh:

Wow - $350-500 is too rich for my wallet!

I would be interested in seeing pictures of what you have. Might work. Thanks.

Thanks for the info - be interested in any measurements you come up with.

I found this one by looking at eBay for Landcruisers for sale (complete cars not parts). This is a 1989 Landcruiser. I think that would be a "FJ62" then. I assume it would work and looks sorta "period correct". I don't like the FJ60 wheels w/ the three triangles. But...I don't know the actual size of the wheel FJ62 wheel.

The measurements I posted yesterday were ones I had just checked on loose steering wheels I have stored inside. I have the FJ62 steering wheel sitting in front and it is right at 16 1/4". Early mini truck steering wheel I believe is smaller.

I saw that one....it is nice but too expensive. Do you know what the diameter would be?
It is similar to a 60 series in diameter if not exactly the same.

1980-84 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 brown Steering Wheel & horn pad no cracks OEM Is what a late fj40 with ps wheel looks like. This may have been a fj60 in Canada but none that I've ever seen.
TOYOTA LANDCRUISER STEERING WHEEL GREY OEM FACTORY EMBLEM LAND CRUISER OE 580A This is a fj60 wheel.

I pretty sure that first link with the brown steering wheel would have been out of a LX model which I don't believe any were sold in Canada. Some RHD LX models came with brown interiors. Looks just like my four late model 4X series steering wheels I have except all mine are black.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40/45 BJ40/42/43 HJ47 Steering Wheel & Column Shaft Assy

Here is a factory 40 PS wheel. I think they were all black in all of them. Same as that brown one I posted above labeled as a FJ60. Like I said earlier, they are insane money.

That would not have been in a US model FJ40 with power steering. That steering wheel started 8/80 (81 model). That one piece column shaft ended 780 and was replaced by the two piece column. Other market still got the one Piece column after 8/80 with the late steering wheel. That is a insane price. One of the steering wheels I have came from a Australian market HJ47. Didn't have power steering but was a small fraction the cost. Wasn't concerned about the column since I have a number of the manual shafts already. If it would have had power steering I would have grabbed the complete column.

Edit: no where in that Ebay auction does it say that is for power steering unless I missed it.

This shows the 62 series steering wheels is slightly larger than the 60 series.

As far as I know while the design changed over the years of the 4X series there are only two diameters. The changed happened between the 72 and 73 models. the earlier being larger.

What started out as a search for a different wheel for my FJ45 got out of hand.

x463....if you find a new steering wheel, I'd be interested in possibly buying your old one.

Wow - GREAT info. Thanks.

I think your "Late model 40 series compared to FJ62" photo is the 81+ wheel? Looking at the 1st photo I think that 81+ wheel is slightly smaller then my 78 wheel or are they actually the same? If the are actually the same size your current photo is good. If the 78 wheels is larger....it's unlikely the swap to a FJ62 wheel would be worth it.
