x463....if you find a new steering wheel, I'd be interested in possibly buying your old one.

My truck is so original....I'm saving everything I take off (I bought a donor column for the electric power steering also). It doesn't look like finding this wheel is difficult as they are likely the most abundant of FJ40 wheels.

Wow - GREAT info. Thanks.

I think your "Late model 40 series compared to FJ62" photo is the 81+ wheel? Looking at the 1st photo I think that 81+ wheel is slightly smaller then my 78 wheel or are they actually the same? If the are actually the same size your current photo is good. If the 78 wheels is larger....it's unlikely the swap to a FJ62 wheel would be worth it.

The 73-80 steering wheels are the same diameter as the 81+ steering wheels. May not show that well in the picture but they are the same. While I've heard the power steering 4X series steering wheel I've never seen proof they were. 79/80 had power steering available as a option but has the 73-78 steering wheel so those probably would have had a smaller one as well if there were any. Looking at the late 4X series steering wheel compared to the 80 series steering wheel I don't see it being that much smaller for Toyota to have used a smaller wheel on 4X series with power steering. The 4X series power steering is still the old steering design which is way behind that of a the 80 series yet the 80 series steering wheel is not that much smaller. No gain worth well using a 62 series steering wheel. I would look for a early 4Runner or early 4X4 truck. Probably cheaper and easier to find one those rather then one from a 80 series that it is still in good shape. Believe I bought that 80 series steering wheel in the late nineties. Most leather steering wheels are not in that good of shape now. Who knows maybe I'll buy a early 80 series someday.

As far as I know while the design changed over the years of the 4X series there are only two diameters. The changed happened between the 72 and 73 models. the earlier being larger.

What started out as a search for a different wheel for my FJ45 got out of hand.

The steering wheel located bottom right of the photo. What year and model was that. Would it fit a 1980 FJ40 Steering column?

After many years I've put the roof/doors back on my 1978 FJ40 and now the diameter of the original wheel is bothering me again. Can't angle my clutch leg out past the wheel b/c my knee hits the door.

Reviving the search for a smaller Toyota wheel.

I found this which I sorta like and suspect I could adapt a correct FJ40 center horn pad to make it look more appropriate:

Listed as an early 80s Toyota SR5 pickup truck steering wheel.

Anyone know the diameter and if the spline is compatible? (asking several eBay sellers also - but better knowledge here!)

Horn and turn signals I can figure out.

An 80 series wheel will fit your column (assuming its OE) and has the embossed "Land Cruiser" text. Not sure how much smaller it is than your current wheel, but they are plentiful and easy to find here on the forum.

Here is a 15" wheel that looks decent in a 40. You'd need to sort out adapting it to the factory column and could likely figure out a way to put your horn pad onto this wheel.

Here is a user that installed this wheel in his FJ40, but pretty sure it had a chevy column.

I have an SR5 wheel like the one you had pictured above. Right now it is mounted in an 80 series. But I'm parting that rig out. I would sell it. It is 15.3" or so if I remember correctly. It is about the same as a FJ80 wheels. I think the 80 and 40 spline counts are the same.

Shoot me some pictures! Thanks very much.
