Are there any GM 5 speeds that are any good? I have a SM465 that I would like to put in, but I'd like and OD too because the trails I like are an hour away. It will be behind a 69 350 and mated to the 3 speed case in a 73 Pig.

Am I asking for adapter trouble if I go with any other trans than the SM465 or SM420?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Probably the only tranny worth mentioning is the NV4500.

Peronally, I'd go auto in a V8 powered rig.

The only two non Toyota 5 spd. trannys I'm aware that have adaptors available are the NV4500 (Advance Adaptors) & the Clark 280VO (JB Conversions). Get the pre '95 NV for it's 6.32 1st gear. I'm pretty sure JB conversions has the tranny to tcase adaptor too. Look for the Clark trannys in larger cab chassis trucks, such as schoolbuses, dump trucks or delivery type trucks.

Are you getting lazy in your older age James? ;p

There are a lot of NV4500s out there in Cruisers, and they seem to more than up to snuff more most purposes.

I had a NV4500 in my cruiser. It was stout!! I don't think you could break it. Tranny and adaptors cost expensive, but you get what you pay for. I pulled it for the convience of the drive train below. BTW I used Jack Rice's write up on the NV for install and research.......invaluable.

The cost of the drivetrain below was less than half of the cost of the NV and all of the components need to make it work.

If you want OD, then a NV4500 or a 700r4.

my 2 cents

I drove a V8 powered truck with a 700R4 and Dana300 in it.

You roll up to the obstacle and lay your foot into the gas until you pop over it. It's NICE.

Behind my 2F, I will stick with the SM420, though... :D

I ran a stock Cruiser 4-speed behind a carbed V8 for many years, then the SM465 for about 3 years....then the SM465 behind a TBI 350 for another 2 years...

now, 700R...I'll never go back to a stick.
