I am setting up to do a sm465 conversion. Gettin rid of the stock 3sp. (unwheelable with 4.11 and 35's ) Been researching adapters.

I need some opinions on who has the best bang for the buck in adapters. and the most complete kit.

I am useing a 10 spline sm465 out of a 4wd mating to a 72 mdl stock t/c.

Plate adapters will give you the best length, and not require moving or cutting out the crossmember. They are still available.

i've got a woody plate adapter...no issues with it. i also had a classic cruisers plate adapter and it's heavy and the machinework was poor/bolt holes were drilled wrong.

Is there any chance of another plate adapter from Woody?

machine shop can tap the shaft. No problem there. I am more concerned with seals pilot berings gasket set and bolts.

Seems to me If you get a good tranny changing the shaft is a difficult way to solve a simple problem drilling and tapping is what I have planned.

cruiser drew, Thanks for the info this is the kit I was looking at. Using this kit seems as if I will avoid alot of the extra work and rebuilding drivelines cross members. and ending up with a stub rear shaft. Just needed some confermation that what i was thinking was correct.

I had not heard of a machining problem with the 1" adapters, rather a problem with the drive gears falling off the shaft out on the trail?? I doubt this was a wide spread problem though. We designed a 5/8" thick adapter (using a freeze plug at the bottom bearing) that would let the 3 speed drive gear fully seat onto the GM output shaft---thought this might be the remedy. We never put the 5/8" adapter on the market because we would still be stuck with a side-thruster transfer-case, and still stuck with no rear bearing support.

ok now downey's got me worried anybody had this problem?

two posted on the cc adapters and two had problems.....hhhhhmmmmm. not good odds

Oh I have seen it happen, and repaired broken junk for people because of it.

Make a positive locking mechanism for the retaining bolt for the input gear of the transfer case and you will be fine.

Since drilling and tapping a hardened shaft is easy for you, I am sure a locking setup like this <---- this is a linkor something similar will be a breeze.

If you choose to forgo the positive locking mechanism for the input gear retaining bolt, this could be the end result:

I had a local machine shop cut me a plate. The guy is a friend of mine and only charged me for the actual cost of cutting, no charge for R&D. I have been running it for a while now with no issue. It is made of 6061 aluminum and clocks the transfer case up, so that I have a flat skid plate that is *almost* level with the frame rails. He may be cutting these once I get a few more miles on mine and prove it is a solid design.

For the gear, I used a similar setup to the SM420 with a huge washer / pin that engages the t-case input gear. See, we made the adapter out of 1" stock, so the gear overhangs the tranny o/p shaft enough to allow this. I think the plate would sell for $350-400, which is not cheap, but is light, non-corrosive, clocks the case, and is a solid well thought out design. Let me see if I can scrounge up some pics.

Sounds like Woodrow should really start making these plates again lol

It's either that, or go to an alternative tcase..
