I have a chevy 350, pretty sure it's a 1976. anyway, I got the sm420 for free. from my research, I never really found out what is involved. are there any adapters or other things needed to fit this to my chevy enigne? how much money am I going to have to put in to get this in my landcruiser.
thanks

Hi All:

First off, try the "search" option for lots of info!

That out of the way, the SM420 tranny should bolt right-up to the typical GM V-8 bellhousing. You'll need both GM and Toyota clutch parts to make this work. you'll need an adaptor between the tranny and the Land Cruiser transfer case.

This swap has been done in a FJ40 countless times; the "search" feature will yield pretty much all the info you need.

Good luck with your rig!

Regards,

Alan

It will bolt up to any V8 bellhousing made up to 1967. Later bellhousings have a larger hole for the bearing retainer, but you can add a ring spacer to the 420 bearing retainer.

Check out the technical links at this web site and the Novak adaptor site.

I am puttin it in a 73 fj40, the engine is already in, I didn't do the swap so I'm not 100% sure the year of the engine, but from the #'s I read off the enigne, it most likely reads a 1976. I'm using my original t-case so I guess I'll need an adapter for that. I'll look on AA for that. So the bellhousing will almost bolt up? what do I have to buy to make that work? any other things I need to do? I did search this forum for other links on this subject, but there wasn't much on swaping in a chevy, just the toyota stock engine.
thnaks for the help.

Do you have the flywheel and clutch assembly for the chevy? If it came with an automatice it has a flex plate on the back of it and you wil need to get the chevy stuff. You will also need a bell housing adaptor as well as a transfer case adaptor.

as for the clutch stuff... its all chevy 11 inch, you'll have to move the slave cyl. unless your going high horsepower stock is is more than enough.

With all due respect, this is horse petunias. There are dozens and dozens of threads dealing with the sm420 and small block chevies. You aren't looking hard enough.

Hi All:

Whoops, my bad on the "You'll need both GM and Toyota clutch parts to make this work." I was speaking of adapting the SM420 to a TLC I-6 engine.

As has been mentioned by others, the SM420 will mate to a 350 SBC with all standard GM clutch parts. So, if you will be replacing a Toyota transmission (J30 3 speed per chance?) you will need all the clutch stuff that normally came with a SM420.

For adaptors between the transmission and t-case, there are two main types; the "plate" style and the "spud shaft" style. Most of the swaps of the SM420 into FJ40s with Toyota I-6 engines have used the short-in-length, low-in-cost plate adaptor. For use with the shorter SBC V-8 the spud shaft style adaptor from AA might work better.

Good luck with the project!

Alan

Check the technical links on the top of this page. Everything is basic and will be desribed in detail. Good luck
