Sliding Side Window Rubber Channel Replacement

Hi All,

I've been replacing all my rubber stuff as preventative maintenance over time. After 21 years and UV or hot fluids, its good to have a refresh.

Has anyone replaced the inner rubber channel that the glass slides in on their side windows? I have a the FRP top and wanted to know what all I have to order.

I have no issues with seals around the frames and there is no leaks, however the rubber channels on the inside of the frame could use replacing.

I'd also like to know the best way to get the glass out so I can replace the rubber.

If ya don't figure out he windows by tonight I can go look at some I pulled from a parts 70 hardtop. I dunno I have a feeling the whole frame might have to be popped out and back in to replace glass.

Hope this helps you. Usually the sliders are corroded.

I'm hoping the whole frame does not have to come out. They were glued into the FRP top I believe.

That tells me there has to be a simple way to get at the rubbers.

I'm going to try a glass shop to hear what they have to say.

hi,

I just remove the whole external frame, purchased new rubber as my old one is not good. I asked a glass shop to do this task, the guy remove the whole frame from inside the car toward out, then getting out the sliding glass and old rubber, then after the paint i will purchase a new double face sticker to return the whole frame back ..

i beleive it is a glass shop work, they can do it within 10-15 min.

i will try to post som epictures later on,

mine is FJ73, 1991 model, hard top.

I ordered the rubber channels yesterday after stopping at the glass shop.

The shop technician indicated that the channels just slip in and are glued in place. He doesn't think the glass has to come out and the frame also stays in place.

I expect to receive the channels in about 2 weeks and will post results when the work is done.

Can you post how they ordered the rubber (from where and what part #)? I have gone to autobody shops in the past and they didn't know how to get new rubber.

You have to remove the fram. Do not glue the rubber channel.

I seem to remember that there are aluminum and metal frame. My 1985 BJ70 are metal. I already found an aluminum frame on a 1986 or 1987.

Here are the steps I followed when I paint my BJ70

Yup, what David said. Frames HAVE to come out. Make sure you use the proper black sealant to reinstall.
The grey glazing tape looks similar but does not hold the same and I know of one 74 window that popped out on the freeway because of it.
You should not have any issues with the steel sashes being rustola because they changed to stainless for HZJ7 production

Hi David, the information in this post is great, I came across it while searching for this same procedure on my hj61. I have noticed there might be another page or to for the installation of the 60 series windows (see pages BO-60, 61). Would u mind posting these pages if they exist please, would just like to read any recommendations on reinstalling these windows before I remove them, my manual does not have the same detail as yours. Sorry for digging up a old post but it's the best information I have found on the topic. Thank you


I am thinking I could just use sickaflex automotive adhesive/sealant does anyone know it this will work ok.

Unlike the 7X series, the 60 series has chrome molding to lock the window in place. There are several thread about this in the 60 serie forum. Uses the "search" function whit these words : chrome - lock - side window - ...

But, at the end, the 60 serie side window is prety much the same thing as the 70 serie... plus the lock chrome.

Also, this thread can probably help you since reuse the chrome is tedious : https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/67729-public-service-announcement-de-chroming-windows.html. I'll probably follow such a route when I reinstall my side window after my restoration.
