Be interested to see how much the tubing will bend when you drop it on a rock.


It will spring back but that bent tube with out more reinforcement or another support I would think would give.

I agree with Ken, the bend that comes down under the cat will see a ton of force when that side comes down on something. Be prepared.

Also, I would have layed the outriggers down or made them stick out just a little bit more, not much, but I have been in some situations were my "step" sliders helped keep the doors out of some bad stuff. And those weren't rockcrawling either, just following some roads that Spresso and MsLocrwln found on a map. (you just can't trust those two when picking "roads":flipoff2:)

The work is very impressive. You have some great skills.

Yeah, I see your point. I've seen other setups that have less than that, so I'm not sure. This type of slider is new to me since the rover had body mounted ones.


I do plan on adding more to it though. I'm going to add another piece of tubing that joins the first and second outrigger together and then plate it underneath to protect the exhaust. Ill dimple die the plate to lighten it up a bit, but that should help add strength to the front half of the slider.
 
Jack, I can lower the angle on the steps a bit since they aren't fully welded up. Shouldn't be too hard to just hit it with a grinder and lay them down a bit.

I agree with everything that's been said...including the bit about Ms. Locrwln and I being the culprits of adventure; hell if it wasn't for us Jack would never leave pavement :flipoff2::flipoff2: :beer:.

Although its difficult to discern from the photo it looks like you will also, in addition to extending them out and up, want to extend the riser portion of the slider so that it extends rearward as far as possible. And the same for the front side. Those obstacles have a way of sneaking in between the slider rail and the tire...ask me how I know! And that's why it took me 3-gens to get mine finally the way I want them with FULL protection.

If you want to look at mine you're welcome to swing by sometime. I'd offer to drive it by but its sitting on jack stands with the exhaust manifold bolts soaking in ATF and acetone...awaiting header install this weekend.

You mean take the tubing and place it up to the end of the rectangular tubing so its as far forward as possible? I tried to get the tubing bent so it would start from the ends of the main section, but my bends were just a bit off so they landed short. :doh: The slider itself is flush with the bottom of the wheel well though.

I might just cut it off, use most of the tubing for the main rail, and buy another few feet on each side to add the "kicker" you always see on other sliders at the rear. What do you guys think?


I can't scratch both sides all together and start new cause thats DOM tubing and its going to be a lot more money buying 14 more feet of it. :crybaby:
 
About the brace that goes under the cat, what do you guys think of the setup that Slee has under the cat? Looks to me like that style wouldn't be very strong, but it must be if thats what they use. The bracket looks like just two pieces of plate "T" jointed to the mounting plate with the four holes.

I know some guys like the kicker but it would be trouble for the places I've taken my 100 due to tight spots... Here's a couple pics of mine...

Since you asked: I'd take Slee's boxed style over your round any day. Now having said that you already have it built. Jack the weight of that side of the truck up by the slider and measure the deflection...for starters.

You could also add plate reinforcement to each vertical side of your tubes to help bolster it...

I figured the round DOM tubing would be better than the square. oh well.... Hopefully if I reinforce it with the skid plate setup, that will help things out. I'll take the high lift out and see what happens, now im scared all that work might be for nothing :frown:

Wife? what is that? never heard of such a thing! :lol:

I think I'm going to level them out a bit, and buy a few extra feet of tubing so I can move the rail forward to the edge of the slider, and then add a small "kicker" section that is flush with the back end too.

I'm going on a fly fishing trip for 3 days next week, so they're going to sit on the garage floor until i get back. I need a break from the garage!
 
Well, other than a few little pieces of plate to cap of the ends, i'd say they're done... I added a kicker to the backand moved the front of the rail all the way up to the end. That and I angled them down a bit too. Added a bar on the passenger side, then some plate.

There's tiny bit of flex, but nothing major, maybe 1/8 to 3/16".

I think thats from the mounts too, not the bent tubing(i've reinforced that like crazy with the skid.) Since there aren't any bolts on the bottom, they dont fit as tight as ones that have bolts top and bottom. You can wrench down on the bolts so they fit super tight, were my "sounded good in the beginning" idea, can't. Oh well.... didnt expect to hit a home run on my first set of sliders ever!:p

Looks good Matt! Yeah...it took me 3-versions before I got the sliders that I was happy with. Something out there about "3rd time is charm"...;)
 
Finally had some decent weather to get these things painted and on the truck. Thanks again for talking me into changing the rub rails, they came out a lot nicer this way IMO.
