I live in NE GA, and have an urge to ski for the first time in 20 years or so. I have painfully ski'd double black diamonds in my early 20's (now I am 43) and do not expect snow like I experienced in Tahoe, locally. But I do not want to experiement driving to multiple locations.

I remember reading some of you were going on a ski trip soon, where do you recommend I go with my snow bunny and her 11 yo boy that has never ski'd?

Wolf Ridge is good as it isn't too busy, the bunny slope is rubbish though. Cataloochee is a good one, it is day use only (not a resort) and has a pretty good closed off beginners slope. Then you have the big ones, Beech and Sugar which are more resort style areas, and they are much larger than the other two. For big east coast resort, I choose Snowshoe, WV it is huge, has a little for everyone and isn't too far. Next year will be really cool as Southwest Airlines is going to start servicing GSP and that means WEST SKIING!!! SLC UT here I come!!! I just hope I can rent a cruiser when I get there....

I would say Beech mtn. or Sugar are your best bets.... they by far have the most skiable terrian and usually have the best snow conditions due to their location.

If you are looking for a nice trip go to Snowshoe. If you just want a quick day of skiing to fill the void of 20 years hit the areas mentioned above in NC.

I went to Boone for 4 years, then hopped over to Winterplace for 2 years. The next year I found Snowshoe, and have never looked back. I will hit the NC areas for the kid though on a quick day trip, but if I am going to spend money for a room, etc. I would do Snowshoe. Pretty much guaranteed good snow all season long. Heck we went 3 times in one year right up to the end of March, and had blizzard conditions.

The cool thing about Snowshoe is that you stay at the top and ski down the mountain as opposed to staying at the base and hitting lifts to the top. Your first run in the morning and after lunch has no lift line wait, just go.

Yeah, I know. I am trying to talk the Mrs. into flying out late April to see here friend in SLC for spring break. Should still be some good snow at Snowbird while I am out there. I think Snowbird gets more snow in April/May than any other spot in NA. I think it is like 9,500 ft.
