Hey Mudders,
I exchanged my gear oil this past weekend using a very handy device I made out of a used 5Q oil bottle, see pics attached/below.
Hope this helps someone. It was easy to make. I just got a tire valve from a local tire shop (free), 5 feet of 1/2 ID clear vinyl hose, a rubber grommet to fit (from a box of various sizes at the hardware shop, just use the hose to get the right size), a valve for 1/2 hose from the drip irrigation stuff at said hardware store, and two clamps I had on hand. I used a step drill bit to get the holes in the bottle, and put a little oil on the hose to get it in the grommet and help it seal. Total cost $7. Make sure you get the plastic shavings out of the bottle before the first use. Also, run the hose down the handle of the bottle and cut a little angle in it so it picks up oil from the bottom of the bottle and doesn't suction to the bottle bottom itself.
I'd say the flow rate is about .5/L per minute, and it varies as you have to carefully give it a few pumps every couple minutes with a bike pump to keep it flowing. I found it to be much, much easier than the pump which screws onto the top of the bottle of gear oil. I hate those things.
The little yellow pump is my engine oil exchange pump, which I got off Amazon for $25. I use that to get the engine oil out, no more messing with the drain plug and torquing the plug. I use the same pump to extract 2L of ATF each time I change the oil, and then I add the same amount of new ATF back in. I use an old 2L soda bottle and mark the line when I extract it so I know exactly how much to add. This system works for me. I know some will say I'm leaving stuff in the pan near the drain plug. To that I say hooey.
Cheers,
Russell
