As some of you know i have been battling a rattling sound over the last year or so and after replacing just about everything i could think of that would rattle it turned out to be a pingning sound instead. So within the last week i starting to replace some emissions parts as i waited for my full tank of regular unleaded gas to go down and today was the day. got within a 1/8th of a tank and so i filled up with some super unleaded. after i filled up i took her for a drive on the highway to work the new gas in and i can't believe after all this time it was the gas i was using that was causing all my headaches. So after close to $1000 and a year later, all i had to do was to use super unleaded instead of regular. I want to thank all the mudders who have helped me battle this over the last year. This is the best source of help i can imagine. The truck drives great and she is once again a happy cruiser.

thanks guys

jason,

glad to hear all is quite and the gas did the trick.

Good to hear you found it and even though it took awhile you learned more about the crusier. :) You could also try another brand of gas. If you were always filling up at the same place then maybe it was just that brand.

You might be able to simply adjust your timing and run 87 just fine without pinging... Just a thought.

Unless you have decked your head .030+ you shouldn't have pinging. 8.1:1 can run 85 octane and get away with it...

Adjust your timing and fix your EGR system and it should run fine and not ping on regular. If the EGR valve does not open properly, combusion will be too hot and make it prone to "pre-ignition" ie pinging.
