Good morning everyone. Recent proud owner of a 96 KZJ 70 as of 24 hours ago. I am new to working on cars other than changing a few simple things here and there as well as oil and fluids. But I was thinking this new addition is a good time to start getting my hands a little dirty albeit my very little experience with fixing cars. So far the members on this forum have been a tremendous help, thank you. Hopefully one day I will be able to help others out as you all have been helping me out.
I have been noticing a significant rattle in what I think is the passenger side door, mainly when changing gears in 1-3 and maybe i dont have my RPMs up so its a little bit rough shift. Does anyone know how to take the panels off? Can you just pull the panels off or will you break any clips the are holding it to the door?
Also, any ideas what the rattle could be or where to start for inspection?
appreciate the help,
Jon

If you have original door panels/cards they are made of a not-too-resilient particle board like material, held to the door with plastic clips. Get yourself a “trim removal tool kit”, feel for where the clips are, and use the tool to pry the clips from the door. You will likely need to remove the door handle with screws, and other things on the interior side of the door as well. Otherwise, you’ll risk ripping the clips off of the door card.

So i was able to het all the red clips off and then the trim on the top. Unscrewed three screws. Two from armrest and one from door handle. Should the whole door handle latch pop off? Seems like it is held on pretty good

Hi.

You need to slide the door handle back (or forward... I can't remember) . There are hooked pieces that slide into the door. Then turn the plastic (green thingy in below pic) piece to release it from the rod. Once released you can slide the rod out.

Picture = 10000 words.

View attachment 3916353Ah perfect i was able to slide it forward but never disconnected it from the rod just pushed it through the whole. The rattle was the door handle rod beating agains the metal door. My fix…..
