Saw a very nice Icon at the airport parking garage on Monday. http://www.tlcicon.com/ What a nice ride! Price starts at $88,000

I'm sure they are very nice and capable machines but I think only people with more money than sense, or a least more money than they know what to do with, would buy one. You could probably build four very well equipped machines for that price.

I think this Icon owner probably has more money than time! You can build a very nice rig if you have lots of time (pay yourself $1/hour) and like to get nickel/dimed throughout the process. Or perhaps the owner is not extremely mechanically inclined and wanted a turn key vehicle to play with. In any case, the attention to details on this vehicle is hard to match for a guy off the street!

I dunno about that. Yes you could throw together four boneyard V8 powered rigs with some off-road goodies for that amount but redoing a rig from top to bottom is another story. Little details like stainless steel dash knobs start to add up. And then there's the labor costs, which we don't tend to include when we do are own projects.

I can imagine if I wanted to build something that has every last detail perfect, right down to the stainless dash knobs and I had to pay someone to do all the work it could easily add up to that amount. I just can't imagine paying that kind of money for an automobile. It seems like you could spend a lot less on a machine that would have the same capabilities and features and put the rest of that money in some kind of an investment for retirement or the kids' education. But, I'm sure that your average ICON owner does not have the same perspective and limitations on their finances that I do.

I feel your pain Brotha...those guys are playing on a different field and we aren't even allowed to watch :-(

We've been through this with you before, Marc.

You have yet to embrace the man-machine relationship appropriately. You keep trying to cost justify the acquisition of a vehicle as though it were a piece of clothing or stock in a company... something that you feel should serve a specific function or an asset that should appreciate with time.

These are vehicles. Real men love vehicles. Some love all of them; sports cars, trucks, motorcycles, powerboats, ... anything with an engine basically; even airplanes.

Marc, you really need to let go and learn to love like a real man. Remember, tomorrow is Valentine's day and your truck needs you and needs to know how much you love it. I plan to spend the better part of the day stroking Pristine.

You forgot power boats.

Post #8 edited to include powerboats.

I've been drooling over that rig for the last couple of hours. Honestly, that would be such a dream come true to own a vehicle like that. I've always wanted to own a classic type of car that was restored to drive as a daily driver. This is sort of like that only it is a new car. Sure, it is a hefty pricetag, but it looks so cool!!! Best part... you can get a turbo diesel!!!

Ok. I'm taking notes for future reference. Check back with me in about 20 years when my kids are out of college, I've gotten a few raises and maybe Danise has gone back to work and my net worth is high enough to be able to be a "real man."

Marc,
You are confusing "love" with "money." They are different.

In that case, I am rich. I do "love" all vehicles, especially Toyota trucks and motorcycles. But I don't see how your love can blossom without the time and money to support it. Fortunately, you can neglect this "love" and it doesn't threaten to divorce you.

I can't stop looking at that truck... Rory and I messaged back and forth about it at work today even!!! I find myself trying to justify to my wife why I NEED this rig. I'm gonna need some help here guys... oh yeah... and a nice little car loan:D

You've got the Cruiser bug bad Michael. Nothing wrong with that. Wait till you see David or Larry's hoard of Land Cruisers. Check out Landpimp's sig line. I'll see if I can find a pic of his little covey of vehicles.

This is my favorite; his 1982 that he found in this condition. Basically all he has done is clean it up and put original wheels back on it.

Actually, I have a set of factory 40 springs you could probably adapt to your setup as some sort of suspension enhancement to provide some lift...

You just have to come pick them up.

Do you think they have more arc than a 60 spring? Maybe I could rig up some kind of add-a-leaf in conjunction with some slightly longer or anti-inversion shackles to get a little more height. I'll do that as soon I finish my bumpers and sliders. Oh wait, I have to start them before I can finish them.

Does pulling an engine, replacing a timing belt, rebuilding a PS pump, overhauling a carburetor, replacing an air pump and PS pump in a parking lot in Salida with borrowed tools........ get me any closer to "real man" status, even if some of these tasks were on a not-so-manly '89 Camry? In my pre-kids days I owned 7 motorcycles over a 10-year period, two of which I ressurected from basket case condition.

That's why I'm thinking all you (an engineer) need are the options of the leaves in these springs as a little boost. You could pick two or three of these and put them in your spring pack, maybe pulling one or two, and making the spring pack taller *and* more compliant. The info on the spring rates etc. must be available somewhere...
