Should I get the rear tire mount?

I have the Slee swingout on my LC. I love the thing. The fact that I have to swing it out of the way to get in the back is no big deal to me.

I've gone back and fourth about getting the tire carrier for my truck, (daily/commuter) and between the additional price off the bat for an already hefty purchase [the rear bumper itself] coupled with the fact that I genuinely don't think I need it, and I'd probably take it off/put it on as I need it, I've pretty much decided to go the route of @MTKID and fabricate an interior tire carrier. This may not be ideal for a lot of folks here, but whereas I need to get the spare out from under the truck for clearance anyway (and because my spare hoist is rusted beyond belief) this seemed logical. I also don't use 80% of the cargo space on a day-to-day basis, and even packed up for trips it won't take up that much space, as my girlfriend and I pack light.

It doesn't seem like a difficult project, even for someone as inexperienced in fabricating as I am. I've been talking with MT and I've got some crude dimensions from his carrier, and I'm gonna rework it and get some more dimensions from inside the truck, but I've already started a CAD drawing for it which I can share with the forum once I actually get it made, welded, painted, installed.

I really think this, coupled with a single drawer on the side, is ideal for someone like me (and possibly many others) who's 100 is a weekend warrior, or who just doesn't want/need/can't afford the 'hassle'/added weight/what-have-you of the swing-out.

Sorry for the lengthy post :meh:

Wait until you see what J @TRAIL TAILOR has design for his 100. If only I hadn’t bought the Slee

He'd better not have anything cool coming out for it, I told myself that this truck won't be getting all of the bumpers and unnecessary items.

So, I posted this Friday before my desert off-roading trip. While I understand the hassle and the pain, as I was out there with all these other cruisers I said "there's no way I'm not getting the tire swing". It looks so much better and that's why I have this beast.

When I had my Excursion with spare in the back cargo area, I had to swap out a muddy flat tire, I would never want to do that again.

I think the rig looks so much better with it plus its an excuse to carry additional s***.

See my post above. Alternatively, we could hassle @LandCruiserPhil to make a 100 version, since he has 'em for the 80.

You can use our interior tire mount in a 100 series you will need to add a couple holes in the floor for mounting.

I have a dual swingout BIOR bumper and like it a lot. Having said that, there are certainly a few "hassles".

One, if you like use a bike rack off the receiver, welcome to hell....the swingout will hit the rack unless you run some sort of drop receiver or extension that introduces all kinds of wobble. The Dissent has shorter arms that can likely clear a rack. The ARB has shorter arms, but they sit in the bumper instead of on top of, so they will likely hit the rack as well.

Two, if you constantly access the rear compartment, you've just introduced 2 more steps to get in there.

Third, rearward visibility will be impacted (even more if you mount traction boards like I have). I addressed this by moving my rear camera to the bumper and then reconfiguring my headunit to an "always" on view so I can see out the back at all times via a dash switch.

Having said that, I like mine. I don't find it too difficult to operate and really like the convenience of not having to crawl under the rig and go through a process to lower the spare. It's nice to have extra fuel and water as well on longer trips. Additionally, it affords me a place to mount my traction boards and Trasharoo (SUPER invaluable for camping as you can pack out all your trash without putting it in the truck). Finally, that solid steel bumper sure gives me more confidence if some distracted driver brakes too late.

Needing to open the swings every time you want something is a PIA anyone who claims different is in denial.:flipoff2: It would be easier to work with swing outs if someone would make a reasonable priced Gullwing window for a 100 series :wtf:

Definitely can be a PIA. But, as with so many things, the tradeoff to me is worth it. Now, about those Gullwing windows.....I 10000% agree with you on those. They are crazy expensive for what they are, but would really make life with swingouts sooooo much simpler :)
