Hey Guys!

I just recently purchased a 2007 Fj Cruiser and I was told by the toyota dealership that i could purchase the undercoat to protect the truck from rust salt etc...Im not sure if this is a good idea since there is a very small amount of surface rust underneath already, and i was thinking covering it wouldnt be a good solution, Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

There is no "factory" undercoating, it is a dealer add-on that they overcharge for and make a ton of profit on. Take it somewhere else if you really want it undercoated.

I'm following Lee again, agreeing with him again, 100%.

If you see rust, I'd address that quickly. You don't have a place listed, are you in the snow belt where they salt the roads?

There are a number of options, that last place I'd do it is a dealership...

thanks for the quick reponce,
I live in canada British Columbia, just snowy for a few months of the year, yes they salt the roads for about 6 months or so, the rust i have is very minimal, just small surface spots really, the dealer quoted me 250 dollars for the job, they said they will blast off any areas that look dirty and then apply a undercoating thats much like hurculiner of truck box bedliner, Annother local shop quoted me 600 to do the job, so i was thinking i was getting a good deal from the toyota dealership?

I am most worried about the aplication of an under coat even though my truck has only small rust spots...is there a better way to do this?

The problem with any undercoating cracking and then water seeps in and then sits. this causes it to start to rust and then your screwed.

something like
Waxoyl USA
or
Eastwoods Heavy Duty Anti Rust

i have it only as it was put on by the distributor already. i would never get it for the reason listed already. I live in Fl now but 33 years in New England and i just rinsed the underside of my trucks at the DYI spray car wash once a week during the winter and never had an issue. as said also i would get under there and wire brush that surface rust and hit it with some POR or simular rust paint. The dealer is crazy as its over 4 years old and i assume been in witner driving up there and has no real problem, but wants you to rust proof it.... yes real money maker for them

ok thanks again guys!!

I completly agree!!!

Thanks Again!

Id check out one of the electronic anti rust units for about the same price, and try and touch up any surface rust with a small brush to keep it from getting started. Maybe some anti rust crap or oil in the frame as well.
