Aric, say that again in step by step instructions I will understand please. :D

Unhook + and - batt. connections and then hook my meter from the charge lead to the + side of battery?? If so what should my meter read??

I will try to pull the alternator out Tuesday after work and take it to Napa and have it tested. I think that would be the quickest way to go. ?? :bang:

except if/when the alt is good, you are still left looking for the real problem..

you are right. unhook pos cable. unhook lead from alternator. meter should read under .5ohm. if it is higher or OL then you have found the issue

First see if you have battery voltage at batt. post on the alt. I'm sure you do. Next pull the plug out of the alternator, check for voltage at the two or three terminals on the harness side of the plug with the key on. One will be a little lower than the others, that's normal. If you do, you have an alt. problem. I'd bet you just have a goofed up wire some where.

Just got back from Umpqua Falls where the water was a little too high, the clouds a little too thick and the water too cold to make for a good day there so we meandered up to Canyonland and caught the freeway home. I will not have a chance to work on the cruiser until Wednesday after work. I see your posts and will try anything. I also found out today I have much more financial breathing room for McGrew- If I can't solve this problem myself I'd happily pay a club member to come and help me this weekend. I know time is short and everybody's pretty busy but there is my offer. Gotta go.

OK...ok...ok...ok..UPDATE!! .here's what I did. I thought after awhile, the easiest way to restore the wiring to the "before burn" condition was to just replace the auxiliary charge cable that got toasted when I shorted it out, right?? So not having any cables around I got the idea of using the jumper cables temporarily, and being careful to use the same colors on both ends(I chose red) I connected the alternator to the positive battery terminal and guess what?? Starts up, shows a good charge in process, dash lights and other non-operable things now working and the meter shows around 13.9 volts when running!! Problem solved right?? I mean after I get another aux. cable installed. :) Then it all came back to me- I remembered why I had installed the extra cable to begin with: I had a charging problem and the cable was the "quick fix" that was recommended!! I had completely forgotten that! :whoops:

So, I'll get a cable installed and see about tracking down my "REAL" problem as soon as possible. So glad it's not the alternator- now I can get the kids some T-shirts.

Friday I'll hook up a cable, then gonna gas her up, grease her up and start prepping for the run. Gotta put some miles on it and make sure it'll hold up. Also gonna put the steering through a lot of use and get back under there and check for anything loose. ;)

wish i was that on track. not been a productive last couple of weeks. :frown:
