Dang it! Got under the cruiser today to check for lost tire weights-OR WHATEVER- might be causing that bad shimmy I have at about 40mph. Found it- steering stabilizer broken in two and bent tie and connecting rods! :frown: Can these things be bent back into place or do I need to replace?? Here we go....................:crybaby::crybaby:

OK, so I looked some more. The long rod closest to the axle housing is OK just the short rod in front is bent. I'm gonna try to use my own winch to try and pull some of the bend out of it but I don't have a very good angle. :hmm::confused::wrench:

can't get on it the way I need to. It's got to be bent down more than forward. Oh well, I think I can get that figured out in a day or two. Hope I haven't F'd up any of the ball joints. Anybody have an extra steering stabilizer laying around that might be the right size?? I'll have to look up what size it is when it's in one piece. I think part of mine is at the crossing at Deer Creek. I want taller tires and an SOA. :bang:

Hehe, Well at least you found the problem! The ones I hate are the ones that wont' show themselves... Yes you should b e able to bend whatever's bent back to where it should be, you might have to take it off to do it though. And it would be a good idea to sleeve it while you're at it, so it doesn't just bend again. I'll see what I might have lying around in the way of steering stabilizers....

 dejavu

Yep, remove, beat into submission, sleeve. That is my current state of mine now as well.

And joy my radiator is f*****up

What do you sleeve it with, some pipe a little bit larger? Or how about tacking some kind of brace to beef it up? Don't know and need some help with this. You guys are gone this weekend huh?:meh:

When you pull it off, mark how exposed threads at the end of the TRE. Remove, straighten, sleeve. Not sure the dia. of the '62, but my was trail fixed using a highlift handle as a sleeve. Lots of beating on.

FWIW I picked up a used OEM from a guy parting out some trucks for $50. I will re-enforce before putting back on. Ive been driving for almost a year now with a corked sleeved steering rod (per-emptive SHUT IT you dirty birds).

Don't say "pull it off"...! It makes me want to go to my room instead of the garage. Thanks for the advise on the threads. I was wondering how you reinstall w/o screwing up the alignment, etc. I will start on that tomorrow after work. Today I am taking the kids to Applegate so they can go swimming. ;);)

You will most likely need an alignment after getting back together. I personally don't know how to align well enough to help there.

Anyone have the tools for popping apart the ball joints on the tie rods?? I didn't know I needed one.

Tried the big hammer method but obviously not the ideal way of doing it and I don't want to make matters worse.

OK, just beat that bolt till it pops out??:D

the ball joint/tre remover from NAPA worked tops after I was told by the mechanics at work all you need to do is beat it till the hole deforms. That did not work.:bang:
The right tool did the trick lickity split.
Good luck,

While on the topic of TRE's. Are they fairly standard? and can be sourced locally?

Both mine are toast and the new to me steering rod in route only has one good side.

Will have to go look tomorrow. Not feeling well today.:frown:

I have this laying in my parts pile... If you think you could make it work, it's all yours!
