Hey Y'all,

Anyone replace their shifter cable before? Searched the forum, and couldn't find anything about the shifter except for a thread about trying to mod the shifter. The only info google yielded was some threads about using a bushing replacement kit.

Girlfriend borrowed the car this morning to go to work. Called me out because the shifter stuck, and when she shifted from park she heard a pop. I removed the console, popped the pin from the back of the shifter assembly, and the shifter cable came loose from the assembly. I re-attached it, and the car shifts just fine, but the fact that it locked up and came off makes me a little nervous.

Has this happened to any of y'all? Any thoughts on the bushing repair kits? Could the cable itself have been damaged when it got shifted and dislodged?

The kits run $25, but my mechanic says they can't recommend using one. They want ~$700 to replace the shifter cable. I can get the cable online for $200. So saving $500 in labor would be nice. Can't find any info on the replacement.

I replaced the entire shifter assembly when my pin wore the guideway completely down a few years ago. I do have a bushing in my glove box as well. I got mine off of bushingfix.com with SKU: BP1Kit

Yeah, bushingfix.com is where I was looking. I'll probably give that a try first since it's ~$25 + shipping.

When you replaced the shifter assembly, was that just the assembly in the console, or did you replace the cable with it? I'm gonna try and hunt down a factory service manual since I haven't been able to find any walk throughs online for replacing that cable. The parts diagrams for it make it seem relatively straightforward.

Just the assembly in the console. Reconnected everything.

Gotcha. One of the Toyota dealerships I called said they think they could fix things without replacing the cable. Gonna pop in there tomorrow to see what they mean. My only concern with not replacing the cable is if it got damaged when the shifter was forced into reverse and came disconnected from the shifter, and why it would have locked up in the first place.

When I picked up my car from the shop today, I chatted with the manager there who has coordinated my previous repairs. Looks like the bushing is the way to go. He confirmed they couldn't find anything wrong with the shifter assembly or shift lock, and doesn't believe there's anything wrong with the cable. Only reason they can't do the bushing fix themselves boils down to liability. It's not an OEM part or official repair. But he suggested going with that instead of paying to replace the cable. Didn't charge me for checking out the vehicle either. Really appreciate how transparent this shop is.

Looks like I'm ordering the bushing.
