Has anyone swapped out their GX460's shift knob?

My GX is still rocking the OEM shift knob but I think about swapping it out every day.

I have an original Hurst shift knob from my dad's '77 Trans Am that eventually ended up on his YJ Wrangler (the 4x4 that got me into off-roading basically from when I was born) floating around but it doesn't suit the GX all too well. Wondering if there are any options for swapping out the OEM shift knob for something more "fun." I've found a few (like this Shiftin one) but curious if anybody has anything else that works for the OEM threads.

I had thought about changing mine too with one of those universal ball style ones but was unsure about the thread pattern matching. Now I'm thinking about making one out of wood and stain it close to the factory wood trim color and lacquer it.

Thanks for posting the thread pattern. I kind of hate the OEM knob on my 470. Knowing that it is pretty generic M8X1.25 (which makes sense given that so many Toyota fasteners are that size), it looks like there are a ton of low-cost, Chineseum options on Amazon:
Amazon product ASIN B07C423M7L
I might get a couple of these to replace both the transmission and transfer case knobs. It's pretty hard to screw up a piece of aluminum with a threaded insert, so betting the Amazon cheapies are just fine.

So we have a M8x1.25 thread. Theoretically anything that fits this should fit. The next question is how well it suits the GX, and more importantly price...
Thanks for confirming the thread pattern! I'll see what I end up with after poking around.

Here you go!
Pick which one you want!! Stylish, fun and practical for when you're at a 'kegger party.

I always get a laugh when I see a car with a beer tap shifter. Get pulled over for something and it's immediately "No officer I swear I wasn't drinking..." meanwhile there's a beer handle 6" from their head haha

I'm annoyed that the plastic "wood grain" isnt exactly fit correctly on mine, it sort of flares out at the front like if its opened up a bit.
If I replaced it I'd go for either exotic wood or leather baseball stitch.
I had a billet aluminum ball on a Miata, not a good idea in 100* heat. I have a delrin ball on my vintage car, good feel and never gets hot.
The IS300 has some TRD round stitched leather baseball types.

Anyone know if the threads are down low or if they are high up inside the shifter?
If it were changed to a ball would the knob sit lower than the long OEM?

Not sure my burned titanium or delrin balls from the Miata would work with my GX tan interior but I may throw those on plus the shift extender for a laugh on my next off-road trip. A black interior or the 2022+ interior might be a little more conducive to a "sportier" shift knob.

I know there are places that do custom wood shift knobs. I bet one of those could work.

If you have a small bench lathe (ether wood or metal) you could turn one yourself out of literally any material you want!
It wouldn't be hard at all, unless you wanted something that was more of a free form shape.

Mines doing the same thing. Hence why I want to replace the knob.

Your need to experiment with stains until you found a match. Could be nice, but time consuming. LOL
My drawers and rear door table are all already a bit different stain that the OEM maple! It's a PITA to match for sure.

Can also 3D print a shift knob.
Literally anything you can imagine and build in CAD, you can 3D print!
Examples:
  1. For those who think rubbing Buddha's belly is lucky, have a Buddha shifter and always be rubbing it for luck!!!
  2. Skulls, of any kind!
  3. A 3D scan of your wife's head, then printed!
  4. Your favorite sports ball, e.g. baseball, football, golf ball, whatever! Heck, even a hockey puck!
  5. Team helmets/heads of whatever sport and player you want.
  6. and the list is endless.
