we did go up one of the 2, either E48 or E29. Probably 48. Forgot what trucks were there but I think there may even have been a full size pickup, not sure. I was in Brent's 80. It did not have any serious trouble. There were one or 2 steep loose rock tight turns spots on the way up that I remember but nothing too bad. So a fairly big capable vehicle could make it. A 40 should have had no trouble. I think I do remember the pickup struggling with traction and tight spots, though. May even have had to be strapped once and had a flat. But was not a problem for a normal mildly-built 80. Could have changed since then (3 or 4 years ago), of course. There was a nice lookout spot up top (Sherman Peak?). The initial climb was through a bleak burned spot and was not particularly pretty, but it got greener later. It was a long day but we were coming from and going back to Monache. I think you should plan for a good half day on dirt but we took the long way out.

When do you plan on doing this? It is closed during the winter but you probably know that already.

Anyone w/knowledge think Sherman Pass may be open right now ?? Or does the F.S. actually close/chain the trail during 'winter' ??

Thinking of suggesting this trail to my club for a run this Sat.2/23/13. Doing a pre-run scouting mission tomorrow in that area as well as areas up 395 into Inyo County.

I realize this post is short notice, but if you have info would appreciate it.

Thanks, John

Not open. I drove that way in the fall several years ago. There was a locked gate keeping you from getting to the pass,we were able to get to Kern River and enjoyed the drive.

Sherman Pass Road (22S05) provides access to the Kern Plateau. This scenic route stretches from the North Fork of the Kern River in the west, east to the high desert, connecting to Highway 395. The road is open from late May or early June, depending on snow, until the snow falls in late fall or winter. From the west, this road climbs out of the Upper Kern River Canyon to Sherman Pass and falls to the east side of the Kern Plateau and then to the Mojave Desert. At the summit of Sherman Pass, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Sierra Crest and Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states. As the road winds downward across the plateau on the east side, the forest changes from red fir to mixed conifer and to pinyon pine. The road is closed during the winter to passenger vehicles.

best thing to do is to call the local ranger station to be sure, any time of year for that matter. Plus they can put on some unexpected fire restrictions and what not.
