Hey folks,
tl;dr: We were towing our 3000lb travel trailer with our 2002 cruiser in Wyoming and a spark plug came out of the head along with most of the threads. We didn't have great options at that point. Bought a Tundra. Now the cruiser is sitting at a Toyota dealer in Sheridan. Lets start at $4000. Email me at lc@tiny.gripe or text at 734.276.9233
I bought the truck in 2016 from a fellow member with 145K miles and it saw almost entirely highway miles after that. Most of the maintenance is in this log file. I've gone through two rounds of timing belts (both times replacing tons of parts in the process including radiator/alternator/starter/hoses/etc) plus lots more.
With the exception of the spark plug issue she's in great mechanical shape. Slight oil leak on the back side of the engine that's been there for at least 5 years and never causes any oil loss between changes, but it's dirty back there. Never abused on or off the road. We tow a light trailer, but I keep an eye on the trans fluid temp and always swap out a gallon when I do an oil change.
The truck is mostly stock. Upgrades include:
We live in Michigan, but I got the truck from Missouri and liberally applied fluid film every year. All the stuff that really matters is rust free. Some slight surface rust on the rockers behind the driver's side rear wheel, leading edge of the hood, etc but nothing concerning. I just keep it covered with marine grease + fluid film and it's been fine. Hard to see how it looks for all the dirt in photos, but after a good power washing the frame itself is still black and shiny. I've never had a fastener strip while working on it. Fluid film works.
If the truck were at home I'd have cleaned up a lot prior to selling it. The interior is filthy (week 3 of the trip) and looks like a 20 year old truck. Serviceable and cleans up fine, thought it could use some front seat covers. Exterior needs TLC. Wasn't planning to sell it soon and wasn't real worried about cosmetics. Rear bumper needs a respray. There's a dent over the rear tail light where I backed into a tree, and it took a gouge to the rear wheel a few years ago. The bare metal I coated in marine grease and I ignored it. It hasn't rusted (marine grease is magic). Lots of light scrapes from time in the woods.
Options at this point are to helicoil it (dealer quoted $500), JB weld it (yuck), swap the head, or swap in a used motor. None of those are wonderful. If I had the time, I'd pay the $1500 to ship it home, put in a used motor, and have something for my son to take to college. I don't have the time.
If you're interested, there's tons of bad photos of the dirty truck here.
