I just picked up a 75 fj40, SOA , 60 rear springs on the front, shackle reversal and the shackles on the front are resting on the frame on the flat. The shackles are currently 5" from center to center of the bolts. I need your opinions as to how to fix. I can put on longer shackles, if I go to about 6 1/2" center to center it looks like it would fix it. Or I could move the frame hanger back. I know Mark W is high on long shackles. What do you think?

are the shackles actually hitting the frame? it looks like there is space, and the springs are flat so that should be the closest it gets to the frame, if it doesn't hit, perfect! wish I could go thru the frame and rock out that low. if it does it, I be you would only need to step up half an inch

Actually I read on the " net " that the safest number for shackles are 6"

Add a Leaf .? the basic problem it's the length of your master leaf.

yeah, if they springs are flat and the eye isn't hittin the frame then that is pretty solid...

The spring is resting on the frame. I did some measuring and I am going to make them 5 3/4" on center.

More pictures are needed of the whole rig. Where did you find it? Everyone but me seems to find good deals especially for being in VT.

even with an add a leaf it would not help his problem.

"safe" shackle length is debatable. he could add an inch or two and be perfectly fine.

is the spring hitting the frame?

All of mine were a little over 6" long eye to eye, and made from 3/8 x 2" plate, didn't bend at all.

If your leaves are super flexy, you need longer shackles. To put an arbitrary limit is not a good idea.. (I've seen dezert trucks with leaves running shackles in the 7-8" range...)

If you have more arched springs you have a raised frame and is means more vertical shackle or not .. ?

On road in a LWB rig .. extended shackles need reinforcement. IMOP.

Oh man I bet you got some silly droop.

I am planing on a shackle reversel this winter and wanted my springs to sit almost like you have it now. I wanted to lower the ride hight about 2-3 inches loose some up travel and just got for silly droop.

But how big of a problem is it to have you spring resting on the frame? or very close to the frame?

I am guess it would harsh the spring...

no because when the spring is compressed flat it will still hit the frame, nothing dimensionally changes about the spring if you add a leaf. Remember when the spring is flat that is as long as it gets meaning that the shackle's angle will not extend past that point, when you go negative arch with the spring the shackle will actually travel backwards so to speak.

Ya sure .. AAL not solve the issue under flex .. only at rest :D ( show truck ! :grinpimp: )

The spring makes a clunking noise when it hits the frame.

Fixed It!

I made some new shackles that are 5 3/4" center to center (an increase of 3/4") and it worked perfect. I now have about 1 1/4" between the frame and the spring- now onto the next project- metaltech fenders and new front shock mounts

hi
i write from italy. In in these months i task to realize a 4-link with the land rover coil at the rear, spoa and SR with fj60 or bj70 spring at the front. Because i would realize your modify with this parts, i've a question for you.

1) what is the distance from frame (where is bumperstop) at the up face of spring (where the bumper stop the axle)??

2) the spring is formed of a part longer and a part of less long. how you have munted the spring?? The part less long at the fixed point (front of vehicle) and the part of spring longer at the shackled point?

3) do you have modify the drive shaft??

4) do you use the cv joint in the drive shaft??

5) how much is the distance from hole of front leaf spring hanger at the frame?

thank you for the answers, scuse me for my English....ciao from italy.

Sorry to Rehash an old post, but how is the ride quality with the new shackle setup.. My Current Shackles are mounted under the frame with short vertical shackles and it like Dog Do, Id like to switch them up to something similar to what you have!

And if there is any chance you could give me a couple of measurements,, like Rise/Run from shackle bolt to shackle bolt, and the distance between the frame and spring!

1) I can't answer as I need to make new bumpstops
2) fj60 rears on all springs, fixed end in front, long portion in front
3) driveshafts were already changed
4) no
5)not sure, explain what distance that you need

Isotel
It rides super smooth and flexy- I gave a guy who has a soa heep a ride and he was amazed how smooth it was. Do you want front or rear spring measurements? I have 36" iroks on it and wish The springs had more lift but it is so soft and flexy that I don't think I will change it.
