I tried looking in the faq section, but didn't find what i was looking for. What I want to know is if I can run sag. p/s with the Man-a-fre shackle reversal kit. Here's a link to it
http://www.man-a-fre.com/parts_accessories/shacklereversalkits_fj40.htm

I liked this kit, because I don't feel like making my frame longer. Has anybody run across any other shackle reversal kits out there? So back to my main quesion, will I be able to mount the saq. box without it hitting the spring hanger? It doesn't look like alot of room there to mount the spring hanger and sag box.

Any help would be great. I'm just in the beginning stages of my rebuild, and would like to know. Thanks

Yep.

No biggie.

Good luck!

That kit is good for hitting rocks and plowing snow, contact MUDRACK Custom Cruisers, Gary's got the good parts shackle reversal and the strongest powersteering kit around.

There is no way I would put one of those kits on anything I own, in fact I bought a cruiser last year that has that and I am taking it off. What is the point of bigger tires and lift if you decrease your approach angle with those huge rock finders?

If you are just doing the reversal w/o a SOA it keeps the castor angle the same, or so I was told.

i would go with proffits shackle reversal, its less of a rock finder. but i'm still not sure it could be used with saginaw. I hope so because this is what i'm going with ... :fingerscrossed:

It is a problem. look on page two towards the end.
I still haven't finished welding it up. Kind of booty fab looking in my mind.

Edit: OT If you look here you can see the Man-a-fre style reversal with a Sag pump mounted up.

That IS NOT a MAF style....

that is an Advance handleing set up...

side note: checked out jack rices aka medusa's shackle reversal using stock spring hangers and he has used the 800 series saginaw box with a the reversal, he did say some modifications were nec. but didn't go into much detail about it. maybe if we could get him here, he could help us out.

problem is: moving the box further out, would make the shaft further out as well, as header and clearence is already an issue in my application and i'm sure as well as others (chevy 350), i find it increasingly difficult to make this setup work.

Sorry, I didn't know the manufacture, that is why I stated "style" meaning similar.

Mine has one of those rockfinder reversal kits with SOA that the PO did. I was planing on cutting it of and using proffits stuff along with a sag ps. But i didn't realize that the saginaw box would interfere with the spring.

Hey Rusty, I like your idea. I really interested in how it turns out.

What have other people done. this has had to happen to other people to?

Just when i think i got my plan all figured out, i run across something else. Glad i keep reading on this board, learn something every time.

I think it could be a problem. I have a 2F so I can't talk to that.

I tried moving the gearbox up but there was a lot of binding in the shaft linkage. If I changed the angle it would have meant removing a lot more of the front crossmember.
I don't think I have the best solution, but I'm working on it. I would love to hear how others solved this puzzle.

My '76 FJ40 has the SR pictured at the top of the page. The "swept back" version. I rarely hit it on rocks while wheeling at both Paragon in PA and most of the trails foundin New England. And no, I don't mean the bunny trails either. :D If you run a 35" tire with that SR there is almost no effect on approach angle. IMHO it works pretty well on a SUA suspension for most folks. My Cruiser also had the standard Saginaw conversion which fit fine.

So zebrabee, your running that SR kit, SUA, and 35's on stock springs? you don't have any rub issues and have good flex?

I was going to get rid of my SR kit like that one because if i run 35's (havn't decided on 35's or 33's yet) i didn't want to be that high in the air with my SOA.
But if it works good for you i could go back to a SUA and not have to finish the Cut and Turn that the PO didn't do.

Stock Springs? No, 2 1/2" Skyjacker Softrides front/4" Softrides in the rear. Slightly extended shackle F/R. Cut rear fenders (cut for "standard" FJ40 flares). Stock front fenders. With 36x13.5x16 Swamper TSL's on stock 80 series steelies. The only place I rub that bothers me is on the front leaf springs at full steering lock (lugs go pop,pop,pop,pop...). Might rub on the inner wheelwells in the rear but only enough to rub the paint off.

I liked how it worked. Very stable, nice flex for SUA. Went anywhere I wanted to go...I'll see if I can find a picture.

Nick

Figured that stock springs wouldn't work. Guess i should of thought alittle more before asking that quistion. Sound good though, love to see some pics. I think i'll just finish the PO's SOA as planed. Can't really afford new lift springs.

BC CRUISER,
Go to a Toyota dealer and get some factory spring hangers from rear of the front springs off a 1980 FJ 40 and weld them on to the front of your frame works great and then you can use some stock FJ 60 springs with the big bushing, longer nice flex, extends wheel base. Hangers are nice and low pro.

Anybody else come with a solution with this set-up? Or is rusty the only one that has tried this???????
