This is a 2013 in Ohio a buddy is considering buying. Any of this rust look serious? Seems like just surface rust to me but my rigs are all clean.

Looks to be in about the same shape as the 09 I bought a couple months ago. I thought it was pretty much all superficial as well. Only issue I've run into was the KDSS valves being a little tough to get moving.

I think it was $41K and had 85,000 miles. 2013 year. It wouldn't scare me off but I'd fly up and check it close. He just has photos the dealer sent trying to decide if it is worth flying up to Ohio from Texas to check it further. :))

Looks like surface rust to me. It should be addressed but the reality is that even if it wasn't treated it could probably be left alone for another 10 years and wouldn't become a problem as long as the vehicle is taken care of moving forward. It would get uglier but wouldn't mechanically or structurally become a problem. In my experience all Toyota vehicles will rust along weld lines if you live in a salt area and are not very diligent about keeping the undercarriage clean. It seems the paint Toyota uses does not adhere well along weld lines.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I felt the same. Minor rust from what I can see and wouldn't sway my decision unless I found something critical on inspection. Just wanted to run it by some other eyes in case I didn't see something and gave my friend bad advise. I told him to go check it out close.
What i see doesn't bother me at all.

Your buddy doesn't have to worry about the rust I see. The treatments others have suggested are a good idea. That superficial rust shouldn't affect the price in the Ohio regional market.

I have hooked him on cruisers..:))) Not difficult to do. He is hot to get one.

Thanks again gang

I was just looking at your signature line.....you have 13 Porsches! Wow - that's outstanding - I'd love to know what models! I've only owned one but am kicking myself for letting it go.... Do you have a photo of the entire collection together?

Take a look at the KDSS valves. Those can get rusty and "freeze". Though with patience and know-how the valves can be released. Releasing the valves is necessary if you want to do suspension work in the future. It would be good to know what condition the pump is in to begin with.

I did exactly what TonyP said... got it up on a lift, and me and a buddy spent about 6 hours hitting it with a wire brush then painting it with POR15. Didn't get a chance to do an anti corrosive undercoating bc I had to let the POR15 dry but I'm going to spray amsoil hdmp all over it when I get a chance.

yeah...true...good idea to look at them and be sure

Got my first one from a friend 25 years ago. The air cooled ones have shot up in value. Some are crazy...worth over a million.
You can't advertise them for sale. It i dangerous. You have to send them to good consignment places or auction houses like Jerry Sprinfield did recently

Oh....I sold one recently to feed my cruizer addiction. I am trying to do a diesel build...find an old 80 I can put a diesel in

it looks livable pending the KDSS inspection but why not find him a clean local TX rig and ahve him come visit and drive it home....
nothing nicer then working on a super clean rig...... wish I'd know about TX trucks when I was building 40's and using Rusty Maine trucks !!

He is here in Houston also. We have been scanning the internet for a couple of weeks. Found a good deal in Ohio, California ( 3 owners)
and a couple in San Antonio.

My 2013 looked like a new rig. I do live in S. California with drought the last 4-5 years my 2013 never got wet.
Might be something to think about when buying used/pre-owned.
I say purchase a California or Texas LC.

yeah I see 2008's that are perfect. No rust at all.
