Hi all,

I have an fj62 I bought a few years ago from a Mud member. was my daily driver for ~3 years then got another car in order to start a rebuild.

I got everything taken apart then had to pause due to money/time concerns. On top of that I had to move out of the space I was using and move everything into storage. Currently renting a relatively cheap space to store the parts.

My predicament is that while I would love to keep "Big Red" until I can find a new space to work on it, money is tight at the moment and I am trying to stay focused on getting my architecture license.

I'm wondering if others have been in similar situations and why they choose to sell or keep? Since it's all taken apart i feel like it will be much harder to sell parts/turn a profit (or even break even).

I'm pretty torn. Any advice would be Appreciated!

Thanks,
Lukas

Lord knows I should not be giving life advice... but if you can squeak by, it will be one hell of a day when you get your rig back on the road!

As you have noted, I’d expect less of a return on it by selling as-is or parting it out vs. it being in running condition. Parting it out would be a significant time investment/drain as well.

If you can swing keeping it, I’d do that and then look forward to the day that you can dedicate the time to getting it back on the road. Just my $0.02 for whatever it’s worth. Good luck with it! 😉😁

it's obviously your choice
how far apart is it? can it be put back together and be a running rig, making it easier to sell
parting a rig you'll end up with lots of pieces not sold, then what do you do with them?
either sell the rig with all the bits and pieces
or
wait and put it back together

not sure how much your cheap storage is costing, easy #'s $50 month x 12 months= $600 a year how many years will it be in storage, the longer it sits the chance of getting back to it are lower and lower

I should clarify. The vehicle is essentially entirely taken apart. Interior removed, body on a dolly, drivtrain pulled out and on a cart. frame, suspension, axles separated as I was planning to do some frame repairs then galvanize it. then rebuild from there.

I'm paying more than that for storage but still manageable at the moment. I'm also not sure how much longer I want to stay in my current city, I have thought about moving after I am licensed in a year or two.

Totally agree!

Several years ago I bought an ex- Southern California Edison Chevy Suburban to harvest the engine and some parts from. "The Plan" was to part out the rest of the truck, and end up with a "free" engine. Being from Southern California, the sheet metal was in fantastic shape, and I thought that should bring pretty good money.

The parting out process turned into a huge PITA. I priced things very reasonably and got few responses. Some people wanted me to deliver the parts and only pay about 40% of the listed price. Fat chance. Then you have the people who call and say they'll arrive at such and such a time... and never show up.

Based upon my experience, I would seriously advise against attempting to sell it for parts.
