Sedona looking for guidance

Can anyone provide me with some insight on the Sedona area? I'm looking to get off the beaten path. Not looking for anything extreme, I have a 96' 80, 32's running boards removed, locked and otherwise stock. I would like to take my wife and kids to see some cool views, natural beauty (other than wifes), hike, and play on some trails a little (not looking sure chance of body damage or required spotter. Any links, directions would be appreciated. I'll be leaving 3/18.

Your rig is ready for anything in the Sedona area. None of the trails are that tough. They just require some clearance. Here's "my" ratings:

As far as scenery:

1. Greasy Spoon/Pipeline (run from west to east)
2. Broken Arrow
3. Oak Creek Homestead
4. Soldier's Pass

In terms of difficulty:

1. Broken Arrow
2. Greasy Spoon/Pipeline
3. Soldier's Pass
4. Oak Creek Homestead (the tough shelf road is now maintained)

Here's scenic pics from Spoon, then Arrow, then Soldier's:

Broken Arrow has a great view at the end called chicken point.

This time of year the trails can be muddy, and busy with commercial jeep tours.

Schnebly Hill road while tame offers great views at the top of the rim. This time of year it is closed at the 2 mile gate ( at merry go round). When it is wet the FS closes the gate at the first parking lot :( If you can make it when it ( first gate) is open it offers nice views.

There are a bunch of FS roads off Dry creek rd. on the way to Enchantment Resort. Some with great views, ruins, and hiking. John nailed the rest in his post above.

Flagstaff has some fun wheeling ( in the snow right now) up at the cinder cones area :)

Hey John how tall is your 100? I've been thinking of regrading as my intended use has changed a 100 with 33's would be a nicer DD. Thanks for the scoop, any corner store for maps on how to get to the trail heads?

Use the Wells' 4WD book. Makes it really easy. :)

Oh, the 100 is up 2.75-inches front and 3.5 inchers rear, plus 2" for the 35-inch tire change.

Sedona has a small but stocked outdoor store in West Sedona on 89A they can set you up. It is on the left heading West.

broken arrow is not hard at all and is really fun to drive on the slick rock in places. no locers required at all in fact you could easily do it in 4 hi if you wanted to but the views and area is great

Mike, leaving Portland on Friday sometime we expect on getting to Sedona on Saturday night/Sunday morning. We'll see with 2 kids it will be an adventure. I used to do the SF Bay area to Vancouver BC in one sitting this will not be nearly as easy. Are you heading down from Bellingham? ahh the good old days, I lived in White Rock and the WW girls used to come up and have their first experience in a bar.

yeah we will be heading down from bellingham on fri morning i figure will drive to redding then stay the night there and drive the rest of the way the next day. you know its spring here when the ww girls start to strip down to sun bathe in 60 degree weather lol

im not complaning

It's not so much the air temp as it is the water temp. That stuff is *frigid*!!

Me, I'll stick with Wet Beaver Creek. It's at least *slightly* above arctic. Though all of the areas near any of the streams and rivers up here are a total mess, thanks to the heavy rains.

This past weekend we did Parsons Trail (Sycamore Canyon) and it was like a friggin shuttle launch to get across all the rocks, deep streambeds, and fallen trees. Broke my finger in the process -- and I hadn't even started drinking yet.

hahaha i guess will be in for some trouble then. i wounder how the crack looks after allt he water? well it will be intresting to find out.

Well I'm sure the 12 pack of Heineken and the bag of ice in my pack didn't help my balance either.

The Crack is pretty deep and fast right now. Here it is in January:

(the only pic I have of the water)

Mike, Why are you driving I5? I'm taking the SLKC route which I've heard is only 1 hr longer with no traffic on the I5 route.

Crack, wet, sun bathing? Hmm

were taking the I-5 because were trying to do this semi cheap and my girlfriend lives in redding which is half way for us so its a fee place to stay for the night. Also i drove the SLC way up last time and although there apperas to be less traffic in some places it took more then an hour longer and to be it didnt really seem any different then the other way. however we did have bad weather so its hard to say. It looks like were leaving eithe rtomarrow or friday since someone dropped out here but will be there soon.

oak creek is pretty chilly right now. i actually got snowed on mon. morning right after the rain, then hail ,,huh. some kinda storm. then today it was all nice and sunny, then out of nowhere the temp drops like 20* and its blowing like a mutha.

Yeah I was on my way back from the Death Valley Daze run with the norcal wagons. Snowed from Williams to Sedona. Going from below sea level at 90 - then to 20. Guess I could handle a dip ;)
