5 Land Cruisers for a family of 4 probably doesn't seem enough for most on 'Mud… but this 1981 FJ40 is the runt of the litter, so it's big brothers do all the cool trips now, and it's relegated to quick trips to the local store. "The Beater" deserves more, so it's time for someone else to enjoy… and free up coveted garage-space while the 80's get turbo'd.

This is a well loved and used and maintained 1981 FJ40 affectionately known as "The Beater", with 214,600mi on the odometer. CarFax shows 3 owners, all in WA State (no salt-belt!!), and no accidents-
  • First owner for 25yrs drove ~162000mi
  • Second owner for 11yrs put on another ~42000mi
  • And we are the 3rd owners for the past 8yrs, driving ~10000mi. It was my son's first vehicle for driving 1mi to school every day, but now that he's graduated and has his own FJZ80, it's my "other" Land Cruiser that doesn't get used much.

Disclosures - while it hasn't ever lived in the salt-belt or had any accidents, it has been used as a 4wd-
  • Rust - the bones show it's a WA vehicle… but it does have rust in the usual areas where water accumulates - the bottom of the door panels, the roof sill, and the floor inside the rear doors. And the horrid quick'n'dirty diamond plate wrapping the rear.
  • Dents'n'dings - it's got a bunch. And where paint was knocked off, it's either got some surface rust, or horrid quick'n'dirty dab of POR15 paint… we weren't trying to preserve as an showroom FJ40; we enjoyed using it!
  • Some internal hacks - the key works for all of the door locks, but when the ignition became erratic, we just wired it to a new ignition switch and a starter switch.
  • Original 2F engine with 214k mi. The engine was rebuilt once prior to our ownership… it's been very reliable and runs great. It was a daily driver for 5yrs while my son drove 1mi to school then college. But then it became a once-per-week drive. And now that my FZJ80 is turbo'd, it's more like once per month or more. Starts immediately with a little choke, and runs flawlessly.

Mods -
  • Custom headers, magna flow exhaust, no cat
  • Front Bullbar and winch - Warn PowerPlant HP (9500# + air compressor)
  • Custom rear bumper with reverse spotties
  • Hell For Stout 4" lift springs, shocks and 2" lift shackles. We had 36" tires initially, which look great. But went down to 33" so it fits in the garage.
  • Detroit soft locker in the rear with 4.1:1 ratio (Randy's ring and pinion)
  • Front diff is Toyota limited slip with 4.1:1 ratio
  • Dual optima battery setup
  • Waterproof painless wiring
  • 6 point internal roll cage
  • LED headlights and Halogen spotties
  • Bikini top
  • Custom built tube doors

No fluid leaks… this lives in the garage, so all things mechanical and drive-train-related were maintained well enough for no drips on the concrete. Washing it's a different story… other than hosing off mud, it hasn't had a wash'n'detail in years. We like the original patina and thought a polish wouldn't suit "The Beater".

Selling to fund the next FZJ80 turbo build... ... asking $14000 OBO

Here's what it looks like in it's glory days, doing what it does best... with 36" tires, and some mud!! Had to downsize to 33" tires so it got a coveted garage-spot.
