Hey gang,

In CO, been through all kinds of weather and never seen this before. Any ideas?

Was driving back through NE New Mexico Friday on I25, 34-38F sleeting. All of a sudden the radar cruise was unavailable, then few minute later all the safety systems shut off. Everything came back when it warmed up.

Oddly, zero issues couple hours later when it was 24F and dumping snow on the north side of CO springs and there had to be 1/4” snow/ice on the front end.

Pardon the pun, but perfect storm of conditions or maybe due for a new battery? Had some odd gremlins pop up with other vehicles when the battery voltage started to fluctuate if a battery was going bad.

Like you, I've had the Toyota safety systems shut down in winter weather when the front end gets covered in snow/ice. I can't explain why it didn't shut down the second time, except to say that the conditions weren't the same as the first time.

Depending on the age/condition of your battery, that might be a factor and might not.

Permit me a short rant on collision warning systems that quit working when I usually need them most - in bad weather with poor visibility. *Sheesh!*

I have had this happen, including the seemingly inconsistent nature of it. It could be as simple as more dirt stuck in the ice coating the toyota logo (radar antenna cover) the first time..

OP is your cruiser a 2018 as your name suggests? Original battery? If so it's likely getting up there, though I wouldn't necessarily attribute these issues to the battery, just that's a long time.

Also if you put vehicle year & model in your sig line it can help us troubleshoot in the future.

Hey @bloc @Willie G. Correct, 2018 Cruiser (I’ll add MY, good suggestion). Battery’s been replaced once w a Lexus LX battery couple years ago. It crapped out when we were dropping off my wife’s RX at a Lexus dealer. Just got it done there. Unsure if they reset the battery monitor via obd after the swap though.

It’s odd, never seen these safety systems offline before and here in CO between metro areas and mtns we get a ton of crazy ass weather.

Reason why I’m thinking battery and voltage variance is there’s been a weird smell in the garage couple days I couldn’t pin down. Popped the hood and it looks like the battery seeped/weeped a bit of acid on the battery holder bar that might have taken off a bit of paint/powdercoat.

Probably toss in a Odessey Perfomance 27F just to be safe. Great deal on them at Napa.

I’ve had the same thing happen here in MI with a good battery. The front radar seems picky about conditions for operation. I’ll echo the @Willie G rant about safety system design.

Anyone happen to know if I need to reset battery settings in the ECU for a new battery? Especially if I’m going from OE to larger capacity Odyssey Performance 27F?

Looked again today, battery is leaking around the positive post. Roughly 2 year old Lexus battery. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s partially responsible for some of the electrical weirdness I’ve seen lately.
