There are not many locations where you can mount a Scangauge. I tried the top of the steering column but I could not get velcro to keep it motion free and it blocks part of the dash unless the seat is really high. I wanted to be able to install the gauge for towing, to monitor water and trans temps, then remove it and not have a bracket or holes left over.
The ash tray is a good spot, it is unused space and it's shaded yet easy to reach and read, when the gear shift is out of Park. I fabicated a mount by filling the front of the cavity with JB Weld epoxy, then I glued in a piece of flat stainless plate at approximately 45 degrees, with the back resting on the latch arm. The arm supports and stabilizes the gauge, and I can reach around, unlatch the arm and remove the entire assembly for storage. I may buy a new ashtray to fill the hole when it is gone. Once the old ashtray is modified, there is no way that it will close.
If you want more details, let me know and I will upload more pics and describe how I did it.
