I've been getting the itch to get out again, so here we go....

Saturday 2/23, Exploration trip SE of Albuquerque to check out the Gallinas Mountains and Salinas Pueblo Missions.

Meeting:
8:30 am Saturday at the Roots Farm Café on 337 just south of I40 Exit 175 and the intersection of Rte 66/337. East side of the road.

Plan: Head east on 40 to exit 196 @ Moriarty, take 41 south to Willard, dogleg Hwy 60 to Hwy 42 SE to Corona.

Goals: Explore the small, isolated Gallinas Mountain range near Corona, NM. From Corona we will head SW and enter the Cibola NF via FR 161, to FR99 and traverse the range south to north, gaining elevation all the way to the summit of Gallinas Peak (8637ft), where there is a fire lookout built in 1933. After making the summit, spend some time exploring spur roads, then make our way east back to CR55/14 and then on toward the Gran Quivira site of the Salinas Pueblo Missions. After exploring Gran Quivira, depending on time we may head back north via Mountainair, Manzano, Tajique and back up S14 to Tijeras, or take the quick and direct route back up Hwy 41. I would prefer to take the back roads through Manzano and Tajique, maybe have a look at Quarai (another Salinas Pueblo Mission site) and possibly take a shot at making it to the top of Capilla Peak. I think the road up Capilla may have too much snow on it, and it would be a dangerous road to attempt if slick and icy.

This will be a mellow day of exploring and I don't anticipate challenging conditions (except possibly Capilla Peak). The Gallinas range should not have nearly as much snow as the Sandias/Manzanos or areas to the North due to lower elevation and southern latitude. Making the summit should be doable. Weather calls for windy and cold, with a high 32-38 (elevation dependent), and sunny.

So far it'll just be @FJCTom and myself. We welcome a few of you to join if you'd like, but would like to keep the group size at no more than 5 vehicles.

If you are interested in joining us, please speak up. Otherwise, expect some pictures later this weekend.

I'll be there.

Also, think you meant I-40 instead of I-25 for the Wells Fargo cross streets.

I'd suggest moving the meeting place another 400 yards south of the intersection to the Roots Farm cafe. Coffee, men, COFFEE! Seeeshhh, I don't know where your priorities are, fellas :flipoff2:

We'll grab samiches at Subway then head to Roots.

Havent been up Capilla peak in years. Probably too much snow this weekend especially if we get what they say is coming today.

Hope you guys have a great time. I slid off my road in the snow yesterday and nailed a tree. I am hoping to start building a front bumper tomorrow.

I didn't even know that place was there, but that is a darn good idea. I'll edit the original post.

Also, what's this "we'll" stuff? Does that mean you're in?

I'm thinking the same thing. Even with no new snow, there are probably some icy spots and that road has some serious drop offs with no guard rails. Bummer about the tree incident, but hey, excuse to upgrade.

Here is one. Doesnt look as bad as it did. Ive got the bumper held on with wire and tek screws right now.

Yup, we're in. There, is that better? :) I just want to avoid doing chores, that's the real reason!

Excellent, glad to have you along. Isabelle (right?) is going to be surprised at how much the pup has grown.

Avoidance of chores is how this run came about... mostly on Tom's part as he has a new house that came with lots of fun chores.

Can see the Gallinas and the Manzanos from my house.

No isabelle on this trip but there'll be two dogs!

Nice views you've got out there! Can you see any white stuff on the Gallinas?

Thanks. Ive got a 30 foot lightning tower and from there I have an awesome 360° view. When people tell me they cant understand Why I would live all the way out here I invite them up. Only takes a few minites for them to get it

Its pretty hazy out that way right now so I cant see very well. I'll check when I get back this afternoon. Usually this time of year it is crystal clear, but looks like some snow is headed this way so it gets hazy

It looks like we'll be playing in some snow tomorrow, maybe some deep drifts. Overnight forecast for the Gallinas range:

Snow before 11pm, then scattered snow showers after 11pm. Patchy blowing snow. Low around 18. Wind chill values as low as -3. Windy, with a west wind 25 to 30 mph increasing to 35 to 40 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

And for the area around Capilla Peak:

Snow before 11pm, then scattered snow showers after 11pm. Low around 14. Wind chill values as low as -9. Windy, with a west wind 20 to 25 mph increasing to 30 to 35 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

That sounds like a great place to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Damn, looks like its going to be pretty cold. Probably a great day for a drive. Just dont get stuck and have to get out, the wind is already getting bad. Snow flurries toward Willard now so cant even see the mountains. Spitting snow here.

Thanks for organizing this! If I can juggle a few things I’ll try to make it. @BigFishAllDay ill text you if I’ll be there
