I think its time to plan the 2024 San Juan trip. I'm looking at the dates of Sept 16-24 to go down and camp. As always, it'll be come down when you can, leave when you need to. I plan on staying down at Golden Horn (free dispersed camping area off South Mineral Creek). Hopefully a few folks can make it down. I apologize for not being too active in the club this year, I've done a lot of traveling for work. Fingers crossed things will settle down and I'll have some time to make a few club events!

apologize for posting same in another thread;

planning my first trip to Colorado in mid August and hoping for some local advice on camping. i would like to basecamp(s) someplace that would give me reasonable access to the Alpine Loop and easy/moderate trails(Funtreks) around Animas Forks before heading home via Ophir Pass.

developed or dispersed campgrounds are good ... ideally not too many motorhomes. i would be traveling on weekends and camping/wheeling during the week.

any tips or advice is much appreciated!

The Golden Horn dispersed camping area is nice and had a toilet. But there can be a lot of motorhomes parked there through much of August, and starts to clear out by Sept. There are a couple of other areas down South Mineral Creek for dispersed camping, but can be crowded and no toilets. If you travel all the way to the Bandora Mine on the same road, there is a great camping area, but again, no facilities (not sure what your situation or needs are). This area has good access to Ophir and the trails out of Silverton.

Have fun on the cruise...done Alaska twice and had fun each time. Was also up there earlier this year temp duty at Fairbanks for a few weeks. We'll get together one of these days!

I am going to be able to make it for all the trip again this year. It looks like it is only Kyle, Chad, and myself for most of it. Josh Campbell will be coming down for the last couple days we are there. I will probably create a text thread with the 3 of us in it to discuss meals and any other necessary arrangements.

The San Juan trip was a blast this year! Myself (Kyle), Jeremy, Chad and Josh attended. Camping was nice and cold at night with most morning featuring a heavy frost or ice! It started out rainy, but the weather was mostly good for the week. We did have a snowy day across Stony Pass which added to the fun. Only one minor mishap on Yankee Boy. I got bucked by a rock towards the edge of a wash out and got hung up perfectly by a square boulder wedged b/w the front axle, leaf spring and oil pan. A high lift, regular jack, shovels, winch and straps, we managed to remove the rock, keep the LC from rolling down the mountains and made a few trail friends (about a dozen helpers). The leaves were changing big time; bright, vibrant!

We also hiked quite a bit more than any other time. Which was cool because there are so so so many beautiful things to see that one can not drive to. Thanks Kyle for being my hiking buddy. Lol
